Dim Sum at Maxim’s Palace City Hall Hong Kong

I realised I seem to have skipped my whole Hong Kong travel food episode, which is a huge waste of wonderful food! :) I love food in Hong Kong - I love food anywhere - but Hong Kong is special because the food there is abundant and delicious! Here’s my spotlight on my favourite dimsum restaurant.

I always go to Maxim’s Palace at City Hall in Hong Kong. I’ve been to the other famous Luk Yu Tea House as well, but Maxim’s Palace at City Hall is the one I return to every single time I go to Hong Kong.

Maxim's Palace Hong Kong

The reason for my obsession with Maxim’s Palace is the Char Siew Polo Pau (Pineapple Bun with Barbequed Pork filling).

Char Siew Polo Pau

A Polo Pau is called a pineapple bun but pineapple is not an ingredient at all. This is because the sugar crust on top of it looks like a pineapple hence the name. Usually, this sweet bun is plain without filling. However, at Maxim’s Palace, they have filled it with Char Siew (barbequed pork) which makes for a divine combination!

The C. Club at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

I was recently invited to lunch at the C. Club at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Nope, it was not for purposes of doing a review - heaven knows how many other more suitable food bloggers there are out there! I was at the Pavilion for another event and it included lunch :)

The C Club is basically a food cum jewellery shopping experience since it is owned by The Carat Club - the jewellery store for the uninitiated. Upstairs is the restaurant with a fusion dining experience while downstairs is the store where you can adjourn to pick up your jewellery pieces after eating. We had a special menu prepared by the chef but I flipped through the actual menu nonetheless.

C Club Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

You would be forgiven for thinking that the booklet on the table is a catalog. It is presented in the same manner as that of a product catalog or magazine with only a few pages dedicated to the menu. I felt it was slightly disconcerting.

Here’s what I like about the C Club. The rolls that are served to you before your meal are piping hot! So hot you can burn your fingers if you aren’t careful. Delicious spread with butter or dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar! I started off my lunch with a Cream of Forest Mushroom with Crouton and Truffle chantily.

Cream of forest mushroom

The soup was chunky and tasty with forest mushrooms and a delicate flavour of truffle. I polished off every drop because I love fresh mushroom soup! Excellent with hot rolls. Mmm….

Teriyaki Scallop on Rice at Isetan Bangkok

I was at Isetan Central World at Bangkok just before I left for the airport and decided to get a bite of lunch. I did not quite fancy having to buy airline food on Air Asia, so I wandered into Isetan’s supermarket and food department on the top floor of the store.

I’m so happy I did! Look at what THB220 (Approx RM22) got me - A large bowl of teriyaki scallops on rice!

Teriyaki Scallops on rice

There were 9 large fresh scallops panfried in teriyaki sauce and served over hot sticky Japanese rice, and served with a glass of cold green tea. It was absolutely delicious!

The scallops were cooked just right so they were soft and tender and sweet. The teriyaki sauce was at a minimal so it was not overly salty and sweet. I enjoyed it so much, I’m going to attempt it at home soon!

Hearty Pea Potato and Ham Soup

I had some lovely pea soup at a restaurant recently and wanted to duplicate it at home. In my mind, I guessed the mechanics of making pea soup, but I’d never done it before so it would be a nice challenge to my skills :) I went home and checked and found a can of tinned green peas in my cupboard. I had no idea how it got there so last weekend I decided to try making pea soup for a simple dinner.

Pea Potato and Ham Soup

At the last minute, I had 2 additional unexpected guests so to make it a heartier soup, I added potato. It turned out to be an excellent idea because the potato made the soup thicker and more satisfying, without the need to add cream (not that I would in any event).

I knew after making this soup that I’d found a winning recipe. It would be perfect for cold winter days or rainy days here or simply for a simple no fuss dinner on days when I don’t feel too hungry. Here’s my easy recipe for a hearty pea potato and ham soup.
