I was recently invited by the affable Ms. Candy to sample some signature desserts at the Huckleberry Cafe, located inside Times Bookstore at Bangsar Shopping Centre. Being a bookworm who cut her teeth on books like Tom Sawyer, I loved the bookish reference of the cafe! Did you get it?
Now, if only it had a white fence, and straw hats and boys wearing dungarees…

The cafe is quite small but it is very cosy. The sofa chairs with their bright cushions certainly add to the ambiance. You can relax there with a book you bought from the bookstore, and just escape for a while with a tea and cake. And yes, they have cakes aplenty!

I’d love if they did coffee art. I haven’t yet come across a cafe here that does it. There aren’t many savories at Huckleberry Cafe but I did enjoy the Mushroom and Onion Quich and the Spinach and Bacon Quiche (both RM9). They are well made with just the right amount of egg and filling. At least I’m not just eating egg and pastry but proper healthy chunks of mushrooms and spinach.
Also worth of mention is the Beef Rendang Cornish Pasty (RM9) The beef rendang is seriously good! I’d thoroughly enjoy it with a hot steaming plate of nasi lemak
Its a tad dry inside the pasty though so they might want to work on that.
But enough about savouries – what about the desserts?!

I love bread pudding and the Banana Raisin Bread Pudding (RM9) is a must have! There is mashed banana underneath the raisin bread topping and its sinfully good. If you love bananas and you love bread pudding, try this one.
I reckon it’d taste amazing with vanilla ice cream too. But as they don’t have ice cream for now, you’d have to make do with vanilla cream. Yes, it works!
If you have a sweet tooth, macaroons will satisfy them. Available in Pineapple (yellow), Red Bean (pink) and Green Tea (green) at RM2.50 each. I enjoyed the pineapple one. The pineapple jam filling is made of real pineapples cooked down – you can tell – and although its sweet, the burnt caramel taste of cooked pineapple is unmistakeable. Friend with me reckoned the green tea one was amazingly good too for green tea fans
The 2 brown cakes behind are Guiness Chocolate Cake (RM9) on the left and Whoppie Pie (RM5) on the right. The Guiness Chocolate Cake has a lovely malted taste just like the brew but it could be a tad more moist to be perfect.
Ditto the amusingly named Whooppie Pie which is 2 chocolate cakes sandwiched with cream. Not too sweet, which is how I like it, but could do with more moisture. Considering I’m not a fan of chocolate, I enjoyed the dark chocolate flavour of both cakes.
And finally, onto the piece de resistance, the Mille Crepe Cake in Vanilla (RM10/slice).

You might be familiar with this one if you’ve ever been to the Food Foundry at Section 17 PJ. The Mille Crepe Cake in Vanilla is 30 layers of crepes layered with fragrant vanilla cream. I don’t have a sweet tooth, but I love this one (because I love good vanilla cream) and I’m drooling just remembering it! ARGH!
It comes in Strawberry and Chocolate too.
Other cakes available are the Hummingbird Cake (RM9/slice) which is a cake made with almond flour, pecans and erm… nuts/grain? Its got a nutty taste that’s quite unique. The Carrot Almond Cake (RM9/slice) is rather heavy.
In fact, I’d recommend that you share the desserts at Huckleberry Cafe. Its certainly made to share and its a great way to spend an afternoon with friends, chatting and catching up.
Oh one more thing – free wifi would be nice but I guess that would detract from the camaraderie one has chatting with friends face to face instead of online
So perhaps no wifi is a good thing after all

I’ve had a Starbucks drink where the barista did coffee art in the foam – but that was a while ago – I guess if the store is not busy and they’re so inclined they might do it…
