When you love food and you see a sign proclaiming to be “Famous Lor Mee” and you are in Penang, what do you do?

You stop and eat even though you are fit to pop, that’s what!

I stumbled on Kedai Kopi Hai Beng (opposite Wisma Perkeso on the way to or in Pulau Tikus) on my last trip to Penang. I hadn’t had Lor Mee for a long time so what better time to savour the “Famous Lor Mee” here.

The portion is relatively big and I can’t recall the price but it should be RM4 or under. The lor sauce is thick and flavoursome although tending to be salty. It comes with slices of braised meat and half an egg. Its actually pretty good! Not quite the best but pretty good :) I liked that it had some garlic sauce in it (not sure what its called) and its best eaten with the sambal chilli it comes with.

There are quite a few other stalls in this coffee shop so dining buddy had something else.

It was a steamed chicken with rice which I believe was something like RM5.50 or so. Forgive the lack of pricing – this was quite a long time back :P

The meal came with a steamed chicken drumstick that was very tasty. The rice had some bits of flavoured bits on it, which really whetted the appetite.

All in all, a very satisfying new experience.

Kedai Kopi Hai Beng is located opposite the Wisma Perkeso as you head into Pulau Tikus area of Penang island.
