I first saw Ying Ker Lou Hakka Restaurant at The Curve. The menu looked expensive and I always found something else to eat there. So I never ate at Ying Ker Lou.

However, recently, lunch buddy decided we would try the Ying Ker Lou Hakka Restaurant at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. So one fine afternoon, we trooped off for lunch.

First up on my menu was Hakka Yam Abacus (RM17).

Hakka Yam Abacus

I’d tasted some nice ones from some roadside stall once before so I was looking forward to these. They are essentially flat round abacus looking beads made from flour and yam and then stirfried. To say they were a disappointment is an understatement. It was salty but not tasty. I thought the strips were meat but it was strips of fried tofu. Not nice.

Next up was something interesting on the menu. Stuffed Bittergourd Hakka Style (RM20).

I thought the bittergourd was stuffed with meat or maybe fish paste like a yong tau foo. But nope. It was a bittergourd, stuffed with chestnuts, chopped intestines, chopped mushrooms, some meat (which I think was chicken) and then steamed. It tasted quite bland and although it looked interesting, did not taste interesting at all.

Finally, something that any Hakka restaurant worth their salt should be able to do well – Braised Pork Belly with Yam (Wu Tau Kao Yoke) (RM24).

The meat was fat and sliced very thin, the slices of yam were sticky instead of nicely floury in texture and it was not tasty. I’d prefer the one at any hawker stall or “dai chao” any day! Expensive too!

Dessert was snow fungus with pear (RM7) which was just very sweet.

We asked for water to be added to make it drinkable.

White rice was RM2 a bowl and we declined the tidbits which I’m sure would have jacked up the bill more. For 2 the bill came up to RM80.50 inclusive of taxes.

It might say that they don’t have MSG in their food, but I’ll never go back. Its overpriced for subquality food. Hence you have to make do with my camera phone pictures. I can’t get better ones because I won’t eat there ever again!

Hello Sue!! Long time no see :) I love the Hakka Yam Abacus! This year itself, I cooked that at least twice already :D Can just buy the yam abacus from the market…easy & pre-made. At least i don’t need to go thru the whole process of kneading it & making sure it turns out perfect ;) Hope u’re doing good!! Take care!
