Owakudani Kuro Tamago – Black Volcanic eggs! Hakone, Japan

One of the interesting foods I came across while touring Hakone, Japan was this – Kuro Tamago – black eggs boiled in volcanic sulfur water. This is something unique to Owakudani in Hakone, Japan where volcanic activity is still rife and sulfur is still mined.

Anyway, since the signs everywhere said that we MUST TRY the Kuro Tamago, we bought some. Unfortunately it only came in a bag of 6 eggs for JPY500 OUCH! Oh well, do as the tourists do, I say! Bring it on!

Ah! Black as night is the egg shell. I think its boiled in water rich in minerals and sulfur. It is volcano area after all. So it comes up black outside.

But what about the inside?

Ah Its just a normal egg inside :P

Tastes normal too. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Makes you think eh? Their marketing for tourists is very powerful! Every tourist, Japanese and Foreign bought a bag of expensive black eggs.

Clever!

maybe it’s just one of those things to add to the ‘been there, done that, bought the t-shirt’ (or in this case, eggs!) :) i’d have to admit though, it sounds a lot more exotic than it looks!

Heya! I came across your site and it was interesting cos I went to Hakone too and they now sell eggs at 100 yen each, you don’t need to buy the whole lot. The one I had is actually very soft boiled. It does tastes like normal, really fresh egg though, but not hard boiled like yours. Where did you buy yours? I bought it on the second stop of the cable car
