When I was down in Singapore most recently with a bunch of friends to visit The Foodaholic, she suggested eating dinner at Tong Shian Porridge Centre at New Bridge Road. For the uninitiated, its in the Chinatown part of Singapore easily accessible from the Chinatown MRT. This is also known as Tong Shian Frog Porridge because they specialize in frog legs. Mmm :P

There are 2 main sorts of food one eats here:-

  • Porridge or congee of any variety e.g. pork meat porridge, fish porridge, frog leg porridge etc
  • Frog legs in a clay pot

Ah poor froggies! :P

Anyway, since there were a few of us, we ordered a variety of food to share.

Clockwise from top left: Raw fish to mix with porridge, Braised Chicken Feet, Claypot frog legs and Meat porridge

I noticed that almost every table would have the claypot frog legs with dried chilli and spring onion. The smell is delicious and very enticing!

Every table and person too would have a large bowl of porridge before them. We ordered a bowl of porridge with chicken slices (S$3) and one with pork (S$3.60). The porridge was smooth though very thick and there was quite a lot of meat in it.

We had a small claypot of frog legs (S$8) which everyone else ate but I didn’t because I don’t fancy it :P I did take some of the sauce to mix with my porridge. Recommended!!

We also added on a large portion of raw fish (S$5.70). The raw fish slices come served with ginger, chilli and limes. Squeeze the limes over the fish, mix it up and then mix it into the hot porridge. The hot porridge will cook the fish slices and its delicious. No smell at all.

Finally, there was a portion of braised chicken feet (S$3.60). It was nice although I felt it lacked a certain something.

There is a stall selling grilled chicken wings which was nice although you’d have to watch out for the chilli which is a little sharp. I can’t remember the price of these.

Its packed in the evenings with the after work crowd and seating is extended to the roadsides. Its also very hot especially when you are wrestling with porridge and claypot dishes!

I think its a decent place to eat – not too expensive, large-ish portions and decently tasty.

The porridge is tasty, but always leaves us thirsty. I think they use a lot of MSG.

Finally you touched on Singapore food. They kept getting introduced through their TV channels but since it appears and disappears even more quickly, never had the chance to take the address or details down. Could you introduce more of these makan places in Singapore?

@Michael: I will include more if I eat more the next time I go down (not very often though)
