YS Hamper Tang Shifu @ Aeon Jusco Bandar Melaka

Last time I was down in Melaka, I had one of the most unsatisfying lunches of chicken rice ball at my previously recommended chicken rice ball restaurant – Chung Wah. Recommended no more! Portions were small, rice was too wet and chicken was not tasty. Its now solely for the tourists – I will not return :(

Anyway, on the way out of Melaka and complaining about the lack of food, we saw the new Aeon Jusco Bandaraya Melaka and decided to stop by for a drink and to savour the air conditioning. While walking around, we came across this restaurant – YS Hamper and decided to stop for a bite.

Now, what we really wanted was some soup which this restaurant supposedly specialized in. Tang Shifu serves up Nourishing Life it says. Don’t ask me why the restaurant is called YS Hamper – yes they sell and pack hampers and some herbs. Perhaps that’s why :P

I wasn’t too hungry so I opted for a Dried Scallop and Sharksfin soup (RM28.90) for a touch of decadence.

Sharksfin and Scallop Soup

The bowl is large and it comes hot which is great. But the bowl is in fact shallow. Still, it was pretty tasty and there was a lot of dried scallop and the stock was flavoursome. I don’t believe it was “real” sharksfin but it had nice bite that could have fooled me. It could be real, who knows!

Travel buddy had the American Ginseng Nourishing Soup set (RM23.80).

The set comes with a portion of healthy looking brown rice, some braised chicken and some appetizer of braised black beans. The soup itself was pretty tasty and sufficiently bitter with black chicken in it. Quite impressive since it would take some effort to boil this soup and using black chicken was a nice “healthy” touch.

We ended off with Longan and Sea Coconut for dessert (RM5). It wasn’t too bad. Very sweet though, so we had ice added.

There was a very interesting appetizer served (RM2) which you can reject if you like. It was pickled guava which I rather enjoyed until I saw the price :P

I reckon its an interesting place to go to if you happen to be in Jusco Bandaraya Melaka. I certainly won’t mind going back to try some of the other soup sets.

Aiyah… in Melaka so far away… where to get soups in a nice air-conditioned setup like this in KL? :)

@rinnah: Unfortunately the only nice soup place I know isn’t air conditioned :( However, Purple Cane does decent soups from a tea pot! :D Perhaps we could do lunch some day? ;)
