Selection of deep fried goodies
I did not take down the name of this self service noodle restaurant in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. Its a pity because I had one of the best Udon noodles ever here! It was a noodle shop I chanced upon while in the area and I saw lots of locals slurping their noodles in there so I walked in.
Problem: No one spoke anything besides Japanese! I was stumped.
Fortunately, there were pictures (but no English text) so we just pointed at what we wanted. You start off with your noodles – choice of soba or Udon. We opted for beef Udon.
You are handed a bowl with blanched udon noodles and some slices of braised beef on top of it. Then you move down the line where there are deep fried goodies on offer which are optional. Right at the end of the line, you pay for your meal and then fill your bowl up with hot dashi soup and condiments to your liking.

You eat at long tables where everyone sits, slurping away at their soup noodles – and they really slurp loud and long! We were the only 2 quiet foreigners in a restaurant full of locals having their lunch.
Braised Beef Udon Meal
I was very liberal with the spring onions (cilantro) and grated ginger as you can see from the picture
Just looking at it makes me hungry all over again! Unfortunately I cannot remember how much the noodle cost
It might have been JPY380 (RM15).
Its a huge bowl – fortunately there were 2 of us eating because Udon noodles can be very filling. The noodles were just cooked al dente and were springy and tasty. The soup was delicious! I wanted to drink up every drop (and I don’t usually drink up soup).
Deep fried side orders - squid tentacle and kakiage
We added on 2 deep fried side orders of a squid tentacle and kakiage (deep fried vegetables). I believe they were JPY140 (RM5.40) each.
Is there anywhere in Kuala Lumpur where I can get something similar? I got myself craving this
Have you eaten? The Pink Parisian has!

That looks really good. And sounds cheap too
Looking at the pics is making me hungry… hahaha… yea. it’s quite cheap though…
I’m dying to find a good restaurant that serves good ramen! So far the best one I’ve had is in Kinpachi (Subang, not the KL one)… I love Wakayama Ramen~! Did u go to the Ramen museum? It’s like an eat all you want place…
I’m pretty sure that it’s one of the branches of Hanamaru! 8D
My absolute favourite cheap eat when I went to Tokyo.
I really wish they’d open branches outside of Japan.
On second thought, maybe not. The decor, layout and bowls look different.
