Tucked away in a quiet residential area of Bangsar is Baba Low’s 486 a no-frills restaurant serving Nyonya food. I happened to be in the area recently and spotted it so I dropped by to try.

Their specialty is Nyonya Laksa (RM5) which comes in a medium sized bowl. You have a choice of mee, meehoon or a mix. I had a mix and although I don’t usually like yellow noodles, this did not have too strong an alkali smell.

The laksa soup is moderately thick but very tasty and not too “lemak”. I don’t usually eat laksa or curry mee but I wanted to drink up every drop. :P It is served with some fish cake slices, tau pok, prawns and half a hardboiled egg.

I also had the Pie Tee (RM4.50 for 4). The pie tee shells are crispy and fresh and the filling is flavoursome.

The dish is topped with a generous helping of raw cucumber and fried onions and slices of omelette that make it taste crunchy and appetizing. Perfect eaten with the chilli served with it and quite filling to my surprise.

This was meant to be a light lunch for 2 but it was very hot outside so we opted for a bowl of chendol (RM3).

The shaven ice is very fine but I would have preferred more gula melaka and less santan (coconut milk). Overall, it was just ok.

One thing I must mention is that the service is a little slow. We sat at the table for a fair while before our order was taken and it took a little while too for the food to be served as I noticed it tended to be served altogether instead of being served as they are ready.

So, if you are in a hurry or very hungry, Baba Low’s 486 might not be the best place to go. I’m not sure if it was like that on other times but I was there after 1pm and the lunch crowd was gone.

Otherwise, I’d say the quality of the food is pretty good, the prices are fairly decent and they have free wifi too! I will try the Nasi Nyonya (RM6) next time – it comes recommended.

Baba Low’s has a branch in CapSquare Kuala Lumpur. I haven’t eaten there so I’m not sure how the service or food quality is.

Baba Low’s in Bangsar is at Jalan Kurau, Bangsar – there is only 1 row of shophouses in the middle of the residential area off Jalan Maarof and Jalan Bangsar. Parking is horrible so park smart.

No pork is served but it is not halal.
