When I was last in Penang, I did not feel like eating the usual hawker fare. So, after driving around aimlessly we chanced upon Jalan Nagore where we parked and walked around to survey the eating places. It was quite early but Golden BBQ Steamboat Restaurant was already filling up so we decided to have dinner here.

Occupying a couple of old shop lots and spilling out into the open air, the Golden BBQ Steamboat Restaurant is a buffet style barbeque cum steamboat. You have a hot plate and pot before you to cook your own food, either by boiling or grilling as you see fit. Fun!

Choice at the buffet was substantial. You get a good selection of marinated chicken, beef and pork, prawns and a good variety of fishballs, squid balls etc. You also get a large variety of fresh vegetables, noodles and egg towards the rear.

If you’re hungry while waiting for your food to cook on the grill or in the steamboat, you can have the cooked food – fried snacks, fried rice or noodles, steamed buns and dim sum, soup are but just a taster. A dish that vanishes quickly is the Prawn Noodles – the soup is tasty!

Penang’s signature Char Kuey Teow is also included. You’ll see the owner frying the noodles at a makeshift stall outside the restaurant. Its available for takeaway at about RM3.50, but if you dine in it forms part of the buffet – very good value indeed!

It was quite tasty too :)

There is a small selection of drinks – soy bean and some fruit punch was available while we were there. For dessert, there are some cakes and fresh fruit you can dip into melted chocolate.

However, I must recommend the old school ice cream available in huge quantities at the cooler inside.

The ice cream isn’t super tasty but if you remember growing up with ice cream that tasted like frozen orange juice or milo on a stick, you will be all nostalgic eating these local old school ice cream sticks!

Golden BBQ Steamboat Restaurant only serves the bbq steamboat buffet at RM19.90 (adults) and RM10 (children 6-12). Go early and try to get a table outside where its cooler. They are open at 4.30pm-11pm.
