Ok when I say Popeye what do you think of? Spinach and the sailor man I bet. Well, thats what I think of anyway. So when I saw Popeye Fried Chicken at MidValley Megamall I had to pop in (haha :P ) to see what it was about.

popeye

Basically, it is your regular fried food joint to give KFC a run for their money – like Long John Silver Popeyes offers fried chicken and fried seafood. It being my first time (and I was not sure if it would be my last time) I went for both fried chicken and fried seafood.

I went for the Fried Chicken Combo meal set for RM11.95 which has 3 pieces of fried chicken, 1 biscuit and 2 regular side dishes plus a drink. I had the impression I could choose my sides like at Kenny Rogers – mistake. You get regulation issue mash potato and coleslaw.

To be fair, I felt that the chicken pieces were larger than those found at other fast food joints. Whether this persists remains to be seen. I opted for mild instead of spicy. The chicken was piping hot and crispy and juicy so that was quite nice. The mash potato is good. Tastes like real mashed potatoes even if I’m sure its not :P and the gravy they pour over it is heavenly – suitably tasty and not just salty like at KFC. The coleslaw was ok – I’m not a fan of slaw.

What they call is “biscuit” in New Orleans terms is essentially a hard bun that is like a tasteless muffin or rock biscuit. I wasn’t sure how I should eat it – with gravy (not provided) or by itself (bland).

I had to wait for the Fish and Shrimp combo which I ordered ala carte for RM9.90. When it came, my eyes opened wide. Its a pathetic offering! You get one small piece of dory fish and 5 shrimp which are battered frozen prawns. Urgh!

To be fair, the fish was juicy and crispy and did not smell. The prawns were just tasteless. But look at that! Don’t order the fish and shrimp combo unless you’d want to watch RM9.90 swim away.

On an overall basis, I think Popeyes will give other fast food chains a run for their money. For now its a novelty so the place is still packed but I’d like to see how it fares in a couple of months.

Popeyes @ Midvalley Megamall is next to Dominos pizza and a few doors away from Jusco supermarket on the LG floor. It is Halal.

The American biscuit is essentially what the rest of the world would think of as a “savoury” scone. It’s been ages since I had one.

Damn Americans and their American language, lol.

Agree with you on the mashed potatoes and gravy, heaven. I think there is some pork mixed in with the gravy and when you combine the mashed/gravy with their bisquits, oh, yum! Don’t care much for their chicken at their store here in Livermore but it was good on the east coast. I’ve tried their red beans and rice. Apple pies are yummy.

My family doesn’t eat beef or pork (Hindu family). My sister used to eat the mashed potatoes. A few years ago, I found out that the gravy contains pork from researching Popeye’s ingredients. I e-mailed Popeye’s because I was angry that they don’t label their mashed potatoes as “Mashed Potatoes with PORK gravy”, or something like that. They didn’t care, so from then on, I’ve never ate at Popeye’s again. Though I’m an Atheist, Jews and Muslims may eat the mashed potatoes without knowing, and that is wrong. The problem can be corrected by simply labeling the product properly. I’ll stick with KFC because I’ve studied their menu and ingredients to know that their food never interacts with beef or pork.

@siti: I have no idea of its truth. Perhaps you can check with the restaurant. I believe they have a halal sign. The previous commentator might be refering to outlets outside of Malaysia.
