When I was in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam early this year, I made it a point to stop by the street food hawkers. If you dare squat by the roadside and ignore the dust from traffic passing by or even flies, you can find some very delicious food! One of my favourites is the Bun Cha Gio or spring roll rice vermicelli.

I had this at a street hawker outside of the Binh Thay Market at Ho Chi Minh City’s Chinatown and it was delicious! I can’t quite remember how much I paid – VND40,000 (RM8 approx US$2.33) perhaps? Even if I was a little overcharged, since I’m a tourist and all, I did not quite mind because it was still delicious!
The Bun Cha Gio street hawkers are noticable with their piles of vermicelli and rice paper spring rolls both fried and fresh.

When you sit on the low chairs in front of them, and place an order (I had one with everything in it – spring rolls, vermicelli, grilled pork, pickles, vegetables etc) they will make it up for you. You can specify what you want but since I was only having it that one time, I had everything. So you see why I say RM8 isn’t all that expensive? It was a large bowl!
They will drizzle the inevitable n??c m?m (Nuoc Nam Vietnamese fish sauce) over it. I especially love having the rice paper spring rolls (cha gio) I could eat them every day in Vietnam and not feel bored. The deep fried rolls are nicer to me.

So, if you dare, join the locals as they sit down by the roadside for their lunch. Its an experience that’s worth every VND!
