A friend told me the YMCA at Brickfields Kuala Lumpur had acquired a new tenant for their cafe so we trooped off to try it today. Previously, there was a cafe there but their food quality was quite irregular and I stopped going after a few times. It turns out they closed down.

The new cafe is Shiok Kopitiam. Personally, I don’t get the obsession with calling cafes “kopitiam”. Yes Old Town Kopitiam popularized it but if its a cafe, just call it a cafe! There’s nothing wrong with being called a cafe!

The predominant feature on the menu is that of western food – chicken chops in particular. They also have some rice sets and pasta. Portion sizes are quite good considering the prices.

They have set lunch menus too and lunch buddy had that. A chicken chop and lime juice drink for RM10.90.

Chicken chop @ shiok

The chicken chop was a good size and was served with a sweet-sour pineapple sauce that was quite interesting.

The lime juice drink was just a normal drink which I suspect was made from a cordial but it was refreshing all the same.

I had what was known on the menu as a “Katsu don” but it looked like no other Katsu-don I’ve ever had for RM6.90 and came with a bowl of coleslaw on the side.

chicken chop rice @ shiok

It was essentially a piece of fried chicken chop with black pepper sauce served on buttered rice with a fried egg on top. Hearty portions and tasty but deceptive if you are really expecting a katsu-don. Fortunately I left my expectations at the door.

All in all, it was a decent lunch at Shiok Kopitiam. Its air-conditioned and cool, there is wi-fi available and food is well priced and come in good sized portions. I saw someone having the pasta and it looked substantial! Parking is ample which is a plus point. Its quite pricey too at RM2 for the first hour but if you dine above RM20 you get RM1 off your parking.

If you’re in the Brickfields area and wondering what to eat you could do worse than eat at Shiok Kopitiam. Location map is here.

I don’t recall seeing a sign but I reckon its Halal and no pork is served.
