Chen Chen Hong Kong Roast Goose and Duck @ Pudu Kuala Lumpur

If you’ve read my rant on Four Seasons Roast Duck Restaurant, well, let me feature now one of my favourite and dare I say one of the best Roast Duck stalls in Kuala Lumpur. Its not a swanky restaurant and is pretty much no-frills. But we all know this is where one gets the best food right? ;)

Chen Chen Roast Goose

Chen Chen Hong Kong Roast Duck is a nondescript lean-to stall hugging the side of a shop lot in Pudu. It is near the RHB Bank in Pudu (by the famous Pudu market). I came here a few years ago and I have been coming off and on every time I need a roast duck or roast goose fix. Their specialities are roast duck and roast goose and they do the latter so well!

I took some friends to visit this stall some time this year and they too enjoyed the food tremendously. Dress casually because its hot! But that never detracted from the enjoyment of some delicious roast meats.

Roast goose @ Chen Chen

The Roast Goose served is delicious. The meat is tender and moist and the roasted skin is crispy and flavoursome. Goose is a little gamey and tough but here, other than having a slightly stronger taste, its about as tough as duck! Very nice. A goose drumstick is RM18 which is enough to feed 2. It is served with some plum sauce.

Roast duck @ Chen Chen

The other specialty is Roast Duck. The skin too is crispy and the flesh is juicy and succulent. None of the dried hard meats you usually get! I like that they serve the meat on the bone. Chewing on the bone is a whole flavour explosion all by itself.

Roast Pork @ Chen Chen

What is a meal of roast meats without Roast Pork? Crispy skin and juicy meat is the order of the day.

Braised Pork

We also ordered a serving of Braised Pork Trotter which was nice, but nothing I’d highly recommend. The sour and spicy vegetable (not pictured) too isn’t anything to write home about unfortunately.

Meat balls

You can order the Meat Ball soup separately, but usually they will serve you a bowl of complimentary meat ball soup when you sit down. You get one per person dining. The meatballs are large and flavoursome and can get very addictive :P

Prices as at early 2009 are as shown below on a large whiteboard hanging on the wall.

Prices at Chen Chen

For about 7 persons dining with flavoured rice all round and some drinks, the whole meal came up to about RM17 a head. We were full, sated and swore we will return some day.

Now that is a true good roast duck restaurant.

Thanks to a comment from Michael, I’ve provided approximate GPS coordinates. I’m new to GPS tagging (and I don’t even use a GPS) but I’ll try to provide approximate coordinates for street food stalls and more obscure locations. Restaurants in malls should be easy to locate :) Do let me know if this makes it more helpful!

@Michael: Thank you and I’ve included the coordinates. I’ll try to do it now and then for more obscure places because I don’t really have a GPS set … yet :P

@rinnah: Can always go again! :)

Great articles you have from one food lover to another. By the way can you provide GPS coordinates for outstation blokes like us so that when we go visiting to KL, we are able to find the place? Thanks.

The sauce there tasted weird, especially the roast pork.

If you want other nicer roast duck around there, there is 1 very famous Hongkong Roast Duck shop, just further in front of Chen Chen. I forgot the name though.

But the signboard is in chinese stating its authentic from hongkong.

There’s another roast duck shop around there too, i think maybe 3 shop all in total including chen chen.

Chen Chen is definitely not the best if u have tried the other 2 shop. I have eaten Chen Chen 3 times, 3/3 = failed in sauce.
