I only had a so-so experience the last time I was at Four Seasons Roast Duck Restaurant at Capsquare Kuala Lumpur so recently when a friend suggested we have lunch there, I thought I’d give it another shot.
Sadly, my most recent experience is far below expectations.

The Roast Duck with Rice is still RM8.80 but it now comes without any steamed vegetable. There was a sprinkling of shredded vegetable on it but I could have blinked and missed it. Taste wise, it was still the same – so so. Any roast duck stall in Kuala Lumpur would have been as good for a smaller pricetag. If I’m forced to come here again, this will be the only thing I’d eat.

I decided to try their Char Siew Maan Fan – Char Siew with egg over rice RM12.80. BAD IDEA! What I got was a char siew omelette beside a portion of dry rice. If they had made the effort to even place the omelette ON TOP of the rice, that might have said something.
I had to ask for some gravy or choke on the rice. They were measly with the gravy too. Usually “Maan Fan” involves cooking up an egg drop sauce and pouring it over the rice like Cantonese fried noodles – a lovely gooey gravy over rice. Thats what it looked like in the miniscule picture on the menu anyway. Ya I know pictures are pictures but still, an omelette!
One more gripe: What’s with the stinginess with the chilli sauces? In most Chinese restaurants, it is normal … rather expected… that there would be tubs of chilli sauce on the table as condiment for for the food. More so in a restaurant like this where they usually serve fried chilli sauce or sometimes known as XO sauce. It goes a treat with the food and adds rather than detracts from the enjoyment.
At 4 Seasons @ Capsquare, you must not only ask for the chilli sauce (there are only a few sets which they keep on the side tables) they take it away when they deem you’ve had enough! I love having lots of chilli with my food so it was very very irritating to have to ask over and over for the chilli sauce which they kept removing from my table after I’d taken a scoop and placed it on my saucer. I cannot understand why this is so and I was not happy with this at all. Chilli is not a precious commodity – so please don’t ration customers or deprive them of it altogether! If you don’t have enough to go round, make enough!
Also, despite my previous experience, they no longer serve fruits after the meal. Whatever happened to the icon of UK hospitality? A slice of orange won’t go amiss. Maybe its still served to those who order dishes and thus spend a lot more than I did, but I decide it was the last nail in the coffin.
I’m not going back to Four Seasons at Capsquare anymore. The next time I eat Four Seasons Roast Duck, it’d have to be at Bayswater, London. Which means a long long wait. In the meantime, I’ll showcase my other favourite roast duck stall in Kuala Lumpur – the roast duck is delicious, the owners of the stall are lovely and friendly and you get all the chilli you want! Beat that, Four Seasons!

Yar, I tried the roast duck too and wasn’t very impressed. After all, they’re supposed to be famous, so shouldn’t it taste above average? I know what you mean about the chilli! Loads of restaurants do that–so frustrating!
@Monstro: Ya famous in name only lah… And that chilli thing really bugged me – is chilli that expensive?!
Gosh, the service sounds absolutely horrible now. But yeah, I’ve never had fruits served whenever I dined there.
