I was feeling rather out of sorts one evening, wondering where to eat, when I spied this tai chow restaurant on Jalan Gajah, off Jalan Yew in the Pudu area of Kuala Lumpur. Jalan Yew is the street under the flyover that goes to Jalan Tun Razak, and the site of the popular Pudu wet market.

Anyway, what caught my eye was the number of people eating at Yee Sang Fatt Seafood Restaurant and so, I stopped to try. There were only 2 of us and we were rather hungry so we needed fast delicious food and we hoped Yee Sang Fatt would do it.

We asked the waiter for recommendations and she recommended “song yu tau” (Steamed ’song’ fish head) steamed with lots of ginger, but I declined because I’m not into freshwater fish. I did notice that most tables had ordered it so it must be good. Instead we had the other house specialty which was the clams in superior stock (“Siong Thong Lala”) – RM12.

Clams in superior stock

The portion was quite large and the superior stock was tasty. The clams (lala) are steamed with birds eye chilli (cili padi) and ginger and there was a subtle taste of rice wine. It definitely whets the appetite and is delicious with hot white rice.

Since I was feeling like fried chicken, we also ordered the Belacan Fried Chicken (RM10) - fried chicken marinated in shrimp paste. The chicken pieces were meaty and well fried – crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. I thought the chicken helping was quite generous.

With stir fried green vegetables (RM8), 2 plates of white rice (RM0.90 a plate) and a coke, the bill came up to RM34. I thought it was very reasonable for a restaurant in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Service was a little slow as I noticed that they would prepare food one table at a time. So, if your order gets stuck behind a large order then do expect a wait. In terms of cleanliness, I found the place relatively clean for an outdoor eating shop/restaurant and tissue is provided which I find a nice touch. I’d be back to try other dishes next time!

Yee Sang Fatt Seafood is NON-HALAL.
