I’d eaten at Waroeng Penyet a couple of times before but for some reason always forgot my camera. The last time I was there, I remembered! Waroeng Penyet is an Indonesian fast food restaurant at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara that sells the traditional Indonesian Ayam Penyet (Flattened fried chicken).
Waroeng Penyet is run along the lines of a traditional warong or roadside stall, where you can either pick your food from the menu or order it in person from the cashier. For now, they are cash only. The menu is quite extensive with many traditional Indonesian foods including Bakso (beef balls) which I have yet to try for some reason.

This time I was there, we had the Ayam Penyet (flatttened fried chicken) – RM7.90. The chicken is slightly flattened before deep frying and you are served a quarter chicken with some crispy fried bits on top, a piece of fried tofu and a piece of fried tempe (soy cake). I found the chicken on the small side because I believe they use spring chickens. So, its a decent portion for one, but not if you are sharing.

We also had the Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) – RM9.90. The fish is Tilapia which is marinaded with sticky sweet dark soy sauce and grilled. It is very tasty but I have a sneaky feeling that it is fried instead of grilled because it is very crispy around the edges. On my last visit, I recall the fish being larger. This time, it was barely the size of my palm which I thought made it rather expensive.
I always make sure I have the KangKung Belacan (RM6.90). The portion again seems to have been downsized, but it is just as tasty as I remembered. The kangkung (water convulus) is stir fried with tomatoes and belacan (shrimp paste) and chillis so it is a little pungent, fragrant and spicy. Delicious with hot white rice!

We also ordered a Telor Tempe Tofu Penyet (Fried hardboiled egg, tofu and tempe) – RM5.90. I thought it was a bit of a rip off because the portion was small. Then again, I believe that most of the dishes are meant for one person and perhaps 2 to share, but its insufficient for more than 2. Waroeng Penyet has one of the best sambal chilli around – spicy as anything but so good!
White rice at RM1.90 a plate was expensive but only to be expected. Drinks too are expensive and I’d steer clear of the Es Jeruk (Lime Juice) – RM3.50, which is essentially lime cordial and ice. Tastes way too artificial. Waroeng Penyet does serve the Es Teh Sosro which is a bottled tea drink found in Indonesia, that is worth trying if you haven’t been to Indonesia. Its sweet and rather strange on my palate but an experience.
I rather enjoyed eating at Waroeng Penyet when they were new but now, after more than a year, I find the portions have diminished in size which is a pity as the food now becomes expensive.
Waroeng Penyet is on the Asian food section (1st floor) above The Street, The Curve Mutiara Damansara, near the linkbridge to Ikano Shopping Centre. The place is popular so expect to have to queue at meal times.
Waroeng Penyet is HALAL.

@Monstro: Yes! Careful of heartburn with the sambal though!
@Mimid3vils: Ooh don’t go now, but you can treat yourself once it heals.
@twosuperheroes: I’m still unsure about trying Bubba Gump. Maybe next time i’m there!
