Pasta Zanmai at MidValley Megamall – Japanese Western fusion

Having had good experiences at Sushi Zen, Sushi Zanmai and Chuka Zanmai, I was very happy to see Pasta Zanmai open at MidValley Megamall. This rounds up the Zanmai chain of restaurants owned by the SuperSushi group and I was keen to see what they had to offer.

Pasta Zanmai menu

I’ve been there twice thus far, but I omitted taking photos the first time. Here are a bunch of photos from my second visit with considerably less food :) but I’ll record my thoughts from my first visit too.

Pasta Zanmai serves Japanese-Western fusion food. Initially when I first heard about it, I was rather nonplussed at the thought of eating unagi on pizza and teriyaki chicken on pasta. But I have to say that Pasta Zanmai does it so well, and the food is so tasty that I immediately warmed to the idea of Japanese style western food!

One of my favourites at Pasta Zanmai is the Japanese pizza.

Pasta Zanmai Pizza

The Pizza is of the crispy thin crust variety, and it is served with toppings of chicken, unagi or seafood and drizzled with teriyaki sauce and mayonnaise, generous helpings of shredded seaweed and bonito flakes and a hot spring egg. Nothing cloying but absolutely yummy! The second time I was there, I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Pizza but I prefer the Unagi Pizza which I found tastier.

The hot spring egg is a poached egg placed right on top of the pizza and you are supposed to break it before eating and spread the soft yolk around the pizza. It is absolutely delicious! The base is crispy and has a faint taste of garlic butter. The pizza might look small but it is very filling so I’d advise sharing it.

Another dish I like at Pasta Zanmai is their pasta in sesame sauce.

Pasta Zanmai Pasta

I don’t usually like sesame sauce much but the one here is delicious without too strong a taste. I had the pasta with shabu beef slices (blanch beef slices) in sesame sauce (RM23 I think) and as usual, portions were large so its again, good to share. You can add on RM3 for a salad and miso soup if you prefer a more complete meal.

Teriyaki Scallops

A typically Japanese dish that caught our eye from the appetizer section was some teriyaki grilled scallops. 2 sticks of 3 fresh scallops grilled with teriyaki sauce cost RM12 and are very yummy although I found the scallop sizes a little small. It is also nice eaten with the pasta as I did. Nothing as large as the scallops on rice that I had in Bangkok though boo…

Unlike many places, the green tea here (RM3) is served by the pot and you can request as many cups as you wish. I had ice cream in wafer the last time I was there too. A little pricey at RM8 for about 4 sticks but its really nice. The desserts always look tempting but I’m always too full to order dessert at the end of the meal. Next time, I’m going there JUST for desserts! :D

I find the prices at Pasta Zanmai reasonable for the quality of food and quantity that you get. Most of the dishes are good to share if you are a small eater and I seriously highly recommend the pizza! :)

I don’t know if Pasta Zanmai is Halal, but they do not serve pork. Pasta Zanmai is presently at 1 Utama and MidValley Megamall.
