Dinner at Canton-i The Gardens Midvalley

I’d been seeing the renovations ongoing for the new Canton-i restaurant at the Lower Ground of The Gardens Midvalley with great interest and recently, went there for dinner to test it out. Upon being shown to a table located next to a mirrored pillar I noticed off the bat that the seating was tight and cramped. Not an auspicious start to dinner.

Canton-i Restaurant The Gardens

We ordered a Wonton Noodle with Stewed Beef Brisket (RM12.80 for dry version or RM11.80 for soup) and the portion was abysmally small!

Stewed Beef Brisket with Wonton Noodle

I so shocked to see the plate when it arrived. The noodles were not bad - crunchy but the beef brisket was miserly with only 1 stalk of blanched vegetable. The beef brisket was quite bland. Disappointment.

So, I was quite anxious to see what the 2 roast meat combination on rice (RM12.80) would be like.

And I was similarly disappointed.

Roast Meat on rice

I ordered a combination of roast meat and barbeque roast pork (Siew Yoke and Char Siew) and I received exactly 5 pieces of each. Granted, they were cut thicker than normal but still, it was such a disappointment. The roast pork had a thick layer of fat on it that some people enjoy but I don’t so I ended up not eating very much meat. The rice was only luke warm and hard and the sauce that was ladled on it was tasteless. I had to ask for additional char siew sauce which was too sweet.

As Canton-i also serves dimsum, we ordered a crispy bun with char siew filling. It was akin to a char siew polo pau but it was only in name.

Bun with char siew filling

The filling in the bun was very little and quite tasteless and so was the bun. I did not enjoy my dinner at all!

The bill came up to RM37+ with taxes (no drinks or dessert) which I found too expensive for the mediocre quality and small portions. Guys will have problems filling their tummies with the small portions served which might end up in an even higher bill! I will not be going back to Canton-i. If I want proper Hong Kong food, I’ll go to the Hong Kong Food Culture restaurant at Low Yat Plaza. Now, there’s a place that knows its food!

Pink Parisian Rating: ★★★☆☆ for taste

Ah….the best food reviews are the ones which are honest to goodness :D

Three cheers to Paris! Three boos to Canton-i.

I think I would avoid this kind of restaurant with such a high price for the food. Even before reading your review. I could easily noticed the lack of taste in it. Even the roasted pork meat were so badly chopped. What? RM1 per piece of meat? Crazy!

LOL, second bad review I read abt this place within 2 days! You would think they would have improved on their table arrangements after their experience with 1 Utama where everyone complainted abt the tight seating.

the portion looks so pathetic. not worth eating. they are one of the dragon-i group right?

@pablopabla: Boo! Boo! Boo! And thank you :)
@Criz lai: It was quite well chopped and presented actually. But was just a disappointment all round

@boo_licious: Really?! I guess they better buck up or close down!

@Xin: Yes they are. I thought Dragon-i was ok but now I’m wondering if it is.

tsk tsk tsk…that BAD uh?? But I tried their Egg Tarts once in 1U and it was pretty good really.. But thank goodness managed to catch your review, otherwise we would’ve gone there to dine… *sigh*

@twosuperheroes: I saw a lot of people dining so maybe not everyone shares my views :)
