Bangkok Street Food - Braised Pork and Rice

I love street food even if they can be a risky eat in a foreign land. But, having been to Bangkok quite a few times and having enjoyed the street food most of the time, I’m usually game to hit the stalls as much as the restaurants. One of the street foods I never fail to have in Bangkok is their Braised Pork leg and rice.

Braised Pork Bangkok

This isn’t Thai food per se (I don’t quite enjoy Thai food) but is a variation of Chinese style braised pork. The pork leg is braised for hours until soft and falling off the bone. You may see the stalls along the roadside with the legs of braised pork and some vegetable on the side. When you order a plate, they will chop up some meat and blanch some vegetables and serve it on hot white rice.

Braised Pork with rice

We paid THB35 (Approx RM3.50) for this plate of hot white rice, generous helping of braised pork and some vegetables. Some stalls also have hard boiled eggs which are just as delicious. You can eat it as it, or mix in some chilli flakes or chilli sauce which is available at every table.

Here’s a picture of what you can expect to find on every hawker stall table.

thai condiments

A carrier containing 4 containers of sugar, chilli sauce, pickled green chilli in vinegar and chilli flakes. There is also always a bottle of Thai Fish Sauce for those who need the extra seasoning. The Thai people mix a combination of these into everything they eat! It is quite impressive to watch and the chilli can be very spicy too! I usually limit myself to a bit of chilli and chilli flakes. I don’t want to upset my tummy too much on a holiday!

Oh… I missed the pork knuckle rice I had @ Chatucak Market~~

Oh man…while in Bangkok, I was too afraid to have the street food, due to my silly sensitive tummy. The pic of this is enough to brave me up for some though!! Hmmm….should make a trip there soon…maybe….damn those riots.

@mimid3vils: Mmm… I didn’t make Chatucak this time round coz of time constraints.

@Monstro: Oh you need a stomach of steel to be able to stomach street food - no pun intended :)
