Delicious Handmade Noodle (Pan Mee) at Pudu

When I wrote about the steamed herbal soups at Pudu, Kuala Lumpur a reader left a comment about the pan mee stall there. Yes, the stall is still there and it is still serving up one of the most delicious pan mee in Kuala Lumpur.

Pan Mee - Flour noodles

Pan Mee (Cantonese) or Mee Hoon Kueh (Hokkien) is a flour based handmade noodle. The flour is rolled out flat like sheets of pasta then cut into strips of noodle. I however, like mine in sheets so the stall owner will usually cut up the sheet of flour into smaller pieces and cook them. Traditionally, they are “pulled” out into thin pieces then dropped into boiling water. I never got the knack of doing this the traditional way.

That said, the pan mee stall in Pudu is a must try if you are in the area. They operate a symbiotic relationship with the herbal soup stall and they only do noodles in soup. Nothing else. A bowl of soup noodles still only costs RM3.80.

As you can see in the picture, there is a generous helping of braised pork and mushrooms that accompany the noodle sheets, topped with a handful of crunchy fried anchovies (ikan bilis). The soup tastes clear and thick with anchovy stock. The chilli sauce that accompanies it is also a worthy mention.

So, the next time you crave a good hot noodle soup, give this one a shot. The stall is under the big tree opposite Shaw Parade (now Eu Yan Sang building) and you can sit in the same area as the patrons of the herbal soup stall.
