Restaurante Platao in Macau – Macanese food

I only had very limited time in Macau the last time I went, so I did not go to the more popular and famous Macanese or Portugese restaurants I was recommended. These include Fernandos which is quite far from the town centre. So, I found myself at Restaurante Platao right in Senado Square.

Restaurante Platao

Restaurante Platao is one of the many restaurants in Macau that serve Macanese or Portugese food as adapted by the people in Macau.

The restaurant is located at Senado Square, in a little side alley beside the McDonalds. The alley way is quite dark in the evening but its quite safe as there are a few other small restaurants along the way. Restaurante Platao is on the first sidelane on the left and is set back from the road.

Restaurante Platao is quite small inside, so they also have dining outside on days with good weather. It was raining the day I was there so the inside was crowded. Like in Hong Kong, space in Macau is at a premium so diners are squashed so close together you might as well be dining in a group!

We had 2 of the house specialities:-

  • Spicy Spring Chicken - half a spring chicken grilled with spicy sauce, rather like Nandos, and served with olives and steamed vegetables and mash potatoes. Nice but nothing super special.
  • Seafood Bacalhau – Bacalhau is a Macau specialty dish you must eat when you are there. Bacalhau is a salted fish and is cooked in various forms – fried rice, cooked with seafood in a cheesy cream sauce, cooked with tomatos… It tastes salty and fishy all at the same time. Definitely something you should not miss even if you do not like it!

Portions were fairly large for 2 persons and expensive too. Dinner (without drinks) came up to nearly RM100 but that’s Macau for you! If you’re short of time in Macau and want to try some local food, try Restaurante Platao. They have lots of locals going there too – you can tell from the way they know what to order while tourists are those with cameras and looking in a puzzled manner at the menu :D

Food is preally pricy in Macau! I sure hope the taste is worth that price.
