Portugese Egg Tart
Most of us who go for dim sum or yum cha sessions will know what an egg tart is. It is a tart of flaky puff pastry casing filled with smooth egg custard on the inside and very popular in Hong Kong and Chinese Restaurants. These egg tarts or “tan tat” (Cantonese) are usually very light in colour.

However, in Macau, you must try the other version of egg tart which is the Portugese Egg Tart. It is like creme brulee in a flaky puff pastry case and every bit as delicious! The difference between the Portugese Egg Tart and the usual Hong Kong Egg Tart is that the Portugese Egg Tart has a caramelized top, so it looks “burnt” on the top. You can read more about it here.
Taste-wise, I find the Portugese Egg Tart more fragrant possibly due to the caramelization of the sugars which brings out the flavour of the sugar and eggs.

Portugese Egg Tarts are not only found in Macau now, but is available in many parts of Asia in most Asian bakeries. I don’t eat egg tarts much, but when I recently visited Macau, I made sure that I sank my teeth into one the local Macau delicacies - the Portugese Egg Tart from Pastelaria Koi Kei. Each egg tart cost about MOP7 (about RM3) which was pricey but oh so delicious! Just look at it!
Makes me want to go grab an egg tart right about now

Oh I haven’t had that in a while. Yours looked well-made, with nice caramelization on the surface and a moist custardy center. *Sigh* I could use some egg tarts for Sunday’s breakfast.
