Scenes from the Pasar Ramadhan

Yesterday, 1 September 2008 marked the first day of Ramadhan for the Muslims and in true Malaysian spirit, the evening saw me loitering around the first Pasar Ramadhan of the year for me.

Pasar Ramadhan

Clockwise: Dried Fresh Dates, Cool Drinks, Malay Kuih, Murtabak

A Pasar Ramadhan is a food market that happens only during the Ramadhan month. Ramadhan is a holy month for the Muslims, where they fast from dawn till dusk forsaking food and water. Certain streets are designated areas for food stalls to operate to sell various foods for the Muslims to break fast later in the evening after the Maghrib prayers.

Sometimes, people buy these food to supplement the food they have already cooked for breaking fast, or other times, if they don’t have the time to cook, then it is to be their food for breaking fast. The bestsellers are of course the cold drinks because Muslims don’t drink water during their fast and at the end of the day, nothing beats allowing the cool sweet drink to trickle down one’s parched throat.

For me, a non-Muslim, visiting the Pasar Ramadhan is a fun because I get to find foods that I might not otherwise be able to get in quantity and variety e.g. Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Dagang, Murtabak, Roti John, Malay Kuih… I will be visiting various Pasar Ramadhan around Kuala Lumpur city when I can this month so I’ll bring more scenes from the Pasar Ramadhan as we go along.

To all Muslims, I wish you a safe fast this holy month of Ramadhan.

I like Ramadhan bazaar, a lot of food~~~

FOOD!! Haha… Your post reminds us that we’ve yet yet to go to the bazaars this time around. So far, I think the best bazaars we’ve gone to are the Serdang, Kajang and Bangi ones.. Superb variety! :p
