If you are planning a trip to Hong Kong, you may find your friends telling you that you “must eat” the mango pudding found in Hong Kong. This famous mango pudding is found primarily at a chain of dessert houses called Hui Lau Shan.

You will find this dessert house chain in practically every part of Hong Kong. This picture was taken in Tsim Tsa Tsui on Haiphong Road. As with all shops in Hong Kong, space is limited so if it is full, expect to have to queue for your dessert fix.

It being summer in Hong Kong when I was there, they were having a special set dessert which was a mini mango pudding with a dessert that had refreshing jelly and a subtle jasmine flavour. I really liked the liquid dessert because it was very refreshing on a hot summer’s day. The mango pudding at Hui Lau Shan does deserve its accolades though. The pudding is chock full of large mango chunks and it is flavorsome with only just a subtle hint of mango without being too sweet or overpowering.

The other dessert I had there was Papaya Tong Sui which is a sweet dessert soup made from boiling papaya, white fungus and almond nuts. This too was refreshing and you have a choice of having it hot or cold. Since it was a hot summer’s day outside, I opted for the cold version which was suitably refreshing as well.
There are lots of other varieties of desserts available at Hui Lau Shan with their specialty being anything with mango. I saw some other lovely looking desserts made with fresh fruit with some of the most delectable looking strawberries and mangos. Hui Lau Shan also serves some hot snacks like radish cake (lobak ko) and curry fishballs which Hong Kong is famous for.
So if you are planning a visit to Hong Kong, keep an eye out for Hui Lau Shan – it is one of those places you just have to try.

Aww, this alone is a good enough reason for a trip to HK!
You must have so so much fun! The tongsui makes me all cool inside. Looking forward to read more of your hongkong foodies
Hee, the desserts at HK are certainly divine … how I miss HK
You are making me miss my hometown so much. That mango pudding looks richly coloured and (I assume) deep in flavour. Too often mango puddings look orange but taste white–you know what I mean?
Mango pudding?? I’m so there!
