Checkers Ribs Restaurant at Damansara Heights

There is one restaurant we go back to everytime there is a little celebration in the family - Checkers Rib Restaurant! Tucked away in Lorong Setia Bistari 2 at Damansara Heights, this place serves up some of the best pork ribs and porky goodness in town!

We always start with the Galette (RM19) which is like a thin pizza served piping hot and with delicious mushrooms, onions and cheese topping. It is about a 6″ size and always leaves you wanting for more but you don’t want to fill up on pizza here! You are here for the ribs!

Another starter we tried the last time we were there were the baked wild mushrooms. A selection of different types of mushrooms are baked in foil and are served with warm crusty bread. The mushrooms are delicious! Hot and tasting of garlic and butter and maybe even a dash of wine.

Worthy mentions are made of the Lord of the Ribs and the Roasted Pork Knuckle.

Lord of the Ribs

Roasted Pork Knuckle

The Lord of the Ribs is a side of slow roasted ribs and is definitely made for sharing as is the Pork Knuckle which is also served braised. The ribs are delicious - tender and flavoursome. The knuckle is crispy on the outside and falling off the bone on the inside. Both dishes are served with coleslaw and mashed potatoes.

What I also love about the mashed potatoes and coleslaw at Checkers is that it is actually home made stuff. The potatoes still have chunks of potato in them and the coleslaw isn’t overpowered by the mayonnaise.

Usually, by this time, we are stuffed to the gills. But we could still manage a little dessert!

Rum Cendol

This is a dessert that isn’t on the menu. But make sure you ask the proprietor if they have it because it is the best Cendol I’ve ever had! The cendol is served with red beans, cincau, almonds and lychees over a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and then has rum added. The combination is sweet, sharp and mellow all at once. Definitely must eat!

Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla ice cream

The brownie is light and chocolatey. I don’t know what Vanilla ice cream is used but its very yummy and creamy. A dessert to share unless you like eating sweets and can handle one whole one by yourself!

A dinner for 6 came up to about 200+ and the best part about Checkers is that they do not charge corkage! So, bring your own wine and enjoy it with your dinner at no extra charge.

The restaurant has been recently renovated with very cute cartoons of pigs on the walls. The restaurant is small and doesn’t seat many and is always full even on week nights so make sure you make a booking to avoid disappointment. The proprietor has been known to turn customers away without a booking, even if the place is still empty!

The cutlery and crockery are simple and without frills but the awesome food makes up for it. The food can be considered pricey but I’m willing to pay for the quality that you get here, and besides its one of the few all-pork restaurants in town!

Getting to Checkers Rib Restaurant can be a pain. The best way is to come from Pusat Bandar Damansara, and after the Esso Station on your left, turn left at the traffic lights. That is Jalan Setia Bistari. Then look out for Lorong Setia Bistari 2. In the alternative, call Checkers at 03-20953304 to make your reservation and ask for directions.

Pink Parisian Rating: ★★★★½ for taste.
Pink Parisian Rating: ★★★☆☆ for price.

This place rocks!! Praise the Lard

Meh! I’m one of those that hate Checker’s ribs. They’re the herb dry-type, not the amazing fall-off-the-bone drenched in BBQ sauce type.

joe: Oh, I on the other hand dislike ribs smothers in BBQ sauce so I guess we’re even :)

nicktay: LOL… indeed!

Why are we… even? Did you backstab me or something..?

Oh..the skin of the pork knuckle sure a very crispy 1 *drooling*

mimid3vils: yep! Its delicious! :)

I have patronised Checkers since the owner Mr.Tan remade it from a straight pizza joint known as Pizza Attack some 12 plus years ago. Its popularity soared only when LOTR and knuckle came on the menu. Diners are not charged corkage for the bottles they bring and that is popular with the young drinking set. A smart move. From time to time, Mr. Tan introduces some new dishes, they are always worth a try.

@clearwater: I guess I learnt about Checkers late coz I missed the whole Pizza era! LOL… Still, I like the place and I know I’ll be back again and again and the free corkage thing really pulls the crowd in.
