Taste Matters at The Westin Kuala Lumpur - complimentary set dinner!

I love dining at The Westin Kuala Lumpur. My usual haunt is Prego Italian restaurant where I love their wood oven fired pizzas. While I was there once, I came across something called Taste Matters so I filled it up and submitted it and then forgot about it.

About 2-3 weeks later, I got a package by courier service from Taste Matters. It was my Taste Matters card (which is like a loyalty card) and some vouchers to allow you to experience dining at The Westin Kuala Lumpur. One voucher was for a complimentary set dinner for 2 at The Living Room!! I was very impressed!

The voucher was valid for about 1 month from date of issue so I trooped off one evening to redeem my complimentary (read: FREE!) set dinner for 2.

The Set Dinner is a 3 course set valued at RM98 nett. You get to choose your starter and main course from the 2 choices available. Dessert is fixed. Be warned of many pictures after the jump so be patient if you have a slow connection.

After placing our orders, we were served with a plate of 4 hot and absolutely yummy buns. There were soft sweet buns and the harder buns with poppy seeds and multi grain. Hot and served with butter. Don’t finish them all up at once even if you want to, because you’d want to use them again later as the meal progresses. You’ll see why…

First, the starters. This is the oxtail aglonotti. I initially thought it might be a stew because I always associate oxtail with stews. But this was stewed oxtail stuffed into pasta skin. It was rather like eating an oxtail meat wan tan.

The oxtail aglonotti comes with flavoured olive oil, served warm. Very delicious!

I had the fried camembert cheese with salad. I love camembert cheese even if its rather smelly and I’d never really had fried camembert before. The salad was a usual green salad dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I liked the freshness of it, which contrasted well with the warm crispy fried camembert cheese. I was rather disappointed with the cheese though. I’d prefer something stronger tasting. As it was, it tasted rather like a cucur (fried flour snack) which did not do it justice at all.

Next up were the main courses.

First off, the king prawn with asparagus and braised leek and butter sauce. Don’t be surprised when the plate comes because all you get is ONE prawn. I was quite disappointed because honestly, the prawn was really yummy! It was grilled to perfection and the leek and butter sauce had a lovely hint of citrus which made it all very appetizing. I really enjoyed this dish even if it was a little salty.

This is where the buns come in handy because I used the buns to mop up every bit of the yummy butter sauce! I’m so going to regret it the next time I stand on the scales but its an absolute delight to the taste buds.

My dinner buddy had the duck and bacon roulade with sauteed spinach and creamy orange sauce. The duck is wrapped up in bacon with spinach inside and rolled into a tight tube.

I found the duck rather strong tasting with a gamey smell. However, eating it with the orange sauce does kill the strong taste somewhat. The portion for this dish compared to the prawn is much larger, and with all that compacted meat, it will appease most appetites.

Dessert was a chocolate custard pudding with biscotti. The pudding was a little on the sweet side but it was sufficiently rich and yummy. I however, am a small eater and am not one for desserts so I could only manage a quarter of it.

I however, devoured the biscotti which was absolutely delicious! I love biscotti that have dried fruits in them  as the contrast between the chewy sweet dried fruits and the hard biscotti blends well on the palate.

Dinner ends with tea or coffee of your choice and everything is truly absolutely free! It is definitely a good introduction to The Living Room at The Westin Hotel. I flipped through the ala carte menu quickly and saw so many dishes I’d love to try from there that I knew I’d have to go back again some day. Perhaps thats the ploy!

If you’d like to have the same experience I did, sign up for Taste Matters today. Its free to sign up and you stand to enjoy a lovely set dinner for 2 for free :)

Xin: Yes, its absolutely free (although if you order drinks then you may have to pay for them) Otherwise, I walked in and walked out and was treated as though I had paid the full RM98 for my meal!
