Ron Shu Xia Pan Mee - Handmade noodles

With the rising fuel costs, its getting harder and harder to find a place that serves good wholesome food at a low price, even at hawkers. I’ve noticed that many hawkers in Kuala Lumpur have raised their prices by a few sen. So, when I discovered Pan Mee (handmade noodles) at a mere RM3.30 a bowl, I had to highlight it.

Ron Shu Xia Pan Mee is located in Jalan Dua at Sungei Besi. It is alongside the former Malaysian Tobacco warehouse or also known as the former site of the Nichii Fashion warehouse. The site is now an upcoming new development area. I’m told that Ron Shu Xia means “Under the Ron Shu tree” and that refers presumably to the tree under which this stall is located.

There is a big banner on the side of the stall so you can’t really miss it. The stall is covered by a zinc roof and there are ample tables for customers. Parking is also quite easy as there are lots on both sides of the road.

Pan Mee or handmade noodles is made the same way as pasta is made. Flour is mixed with water but egg is optional. The dough is then rolled out into flat sheets and is transformed into noodles by way of a pasta making machine. This way, the stalls make pan mee that look like fettucine (flat) or spagetti (round). I however, like mine cut into sheets or “pinched” into flat pieces.

This is a “small” portion which costs a mere RM3.30. Unheard of in these times of rising costs! The portion of noodles is hearty (for a small eater like me) and it is served with spinach, meatballs, mince meat cooked in soy sauce and fried anchovies. The mince meat isn’t all that much, but for RM3.30 you can’t really complain.

I like that the soup base is clear. It is made of “ikan bilis” stock or anchovies stock and I don’t get as much taste of MSG nor is it unnaturally sweet. I’m quite sensitive to MSG so when I wasn’t unduly thirsty after having this for lunch, I knew it was ok.

The stall also serves the pan mee dry i.e. mixed with soy sauce with the soup on the side. I prefer it in its clear soup base. A small portion is RM3.30, Medium is RM3.50 and Large is RM3.80. Trust me, large is truly large!

So, the next time you want to have an inexpensive lunch or are around the Sungei Besi area, drop by Jalan Dua and try this Ron Shu Xia Pan Mee. Its worth it.

Nowadays there are so many pan mee specialist restaurant all over KL area. And most of them has certain level of standard and variety of pan mee favor. But they all have something in common, which are they’re selling at around RM4.50 to RM6 per bowl, nicely decorated and air conditioned. This Ron Shu Xia Pan Mee looks abit different from what I’ve seen, perhaps it’s a more traditional style and sell very limited favors. But I have to mention, the pan mee looks good in photo, perhaps I’ll give it a try someday. Thank for sharing.

This looks like good value for money! Hey, are those taken using your new Canon?

Pablo: Yep it sure is! And yes, they were taken with the Canon :)

Superman: Yes its a more traditional way of cooking pa mee. Nothing new fangled about it. Do try it. If anything its cheap!
