Easy Grilled Steak with Stout and Pepper

I found and modified this recipe for grilled steak from a book on making food for barbeques. I tried it out for the first time last year and it was gobbled up so quickly I hardly had time to have any myself before it was all gone! My dad like it so much, he asked for it again recently! It must be good!

Best of all, like all the rest of the stuff I like to cook, this is so super easy. I recommend you marinate it overnight for best flavour. The flavour of the stout is stronger and it is much nicer too. I used a rib-eye steak but you can use any cut of steak you like. This is my modified recipe for a Grilled Steak with Stout and Pepper.

You need:

How to:

  1. Place the steaks in a dish or in a flat container. Mix the olive oil, crushed garlic, worcestershire sauce, sugar and stout and pour over the steaks, coating them evenly. Cover and place in the fridge to marinate for about 2-3 hours or preferably overnight for best flavour.
  2. Remove from fridge and place the steaks on a plate, reserving the marinade. Press the crushed black peppercorns into the steaks.
  3. Heat up a grill pan and place on grill to cook. If you are doing this for a barbeque, make sure your grill rack is hot. Do not try this in a frying pan. It will only stew in its juices and isn’t nice this way.
  4. Cook to your desired doneness, basting with marinade if it gets too dry. I find that in an oven or stovetop grill, it cooks much faster than on a barbeque so I didn’t have to use the marinade. However, on the barbeque grill, the marinade definitely came in handy to prevent it from drying out.
  5. Serve with a fresh green salad.

I find it quite juicy and flavoursome on its own without any sauce or gravy. If you like having a sauce with your steak, a black pepper sauce would do nicely. If you plan to do this on a barbeque, cut the steaks smaller. I find it is easier to handle especially when you are short of places to sit!

Don’t worry about the stout. The alcohol content is low and it will evaporate upon cooking. However, if you are allergic to alcohol you might want to be careful anyway.

Enjoy your Grilled Steak with Stout and Pepper!
