Singapore Prawn Noodles (Hei Mee)

A while ago, I was in Food Republic in Singapore. Its basically a huge food court in Wisma Atria department store. I’ve since noticed that Food Republic has opened a similar food court here in Malaysia at the Pavilion Shopping Centre but I haven’t been to it yet.

Anyway, while I was there, I saw a long long queue for Hei Mee or Prawn Noodles. I was puzzled as to what made it so popular. From the pictures and newspaper cut outs, I’d say that it used to be relocated hawker and that their prawn noodles was the best in Singapore. I had to put it to the taste test.

Hei Mee

A while ago, I wrote about Hei Mee which I complained about not being able to get here in Kuala Lumpur. The Singapore Hei Mee is similar in style.

The noodles are mixed yellow nee and mee hoon and fried with stock that ensures that it remains moist. The one in Singapore was too wet, I found. It was like eating noodles in soup!

Taste wise, it was nice but nothing so special as to cause you to want to queue for 15 minutes to get your plate of noodles. I’m told that this noodle is now available at the Food Republic here in Kuala Lumpur too. I’d recommend that you have this Singapore Hei Mee if:-
• you’ve never eaten it before
• you haven’t eaten it in a long time
• you are home sick for hei mee

I do have 1 good thing to say about it though. The sambal chilli that goes with it is nothing short of awesome! Eat it as a dip or mixed into the noodles; either way, its really good and was a redeeming feature of this dish. I however, prefer my RM3 plate of prawn noodles from my local hawker stall in my home town. But then, food is a matter of taste so who’s to say that you won’t like this one in Singapore or at the Food Republic?

Awesome sambal? Hopefully the one in KL is just as good.

Hiya,

Just wanted to say that food courts are not known to serve the best hawker fare (they’re mainly good for the aircon), so I wouldn’t judge the Sg style Hokkien hay mee based on this one experience. The good ones are indeed moist without being soupy and I’m sure you’ll enjoy them a lot more :)
