I chanced upon Hong Kong Food Culture at Low Yat Plaza in Kuala Lumpur one day when I was waiting out a bout of rain. It is easy to miss this eatery which is located in the basement of Low Yat Plaza.

There are 2 entrances into the restaurant – One through the basement (its right at one corner and easy to get lost getting to it) and the other easier way is to access it from the outside. It is located down a flight of stairs beside one of the entrances (that faces Sungei Wang Plaza). Its not easy to miss from the outside because you’ll see a little stall selling all sorts of snacks. That is part of the same establishment.

What this place serves is Hong Kong cafe food, just like it is served in Hong Kong. Seating is slightly cramped and there is a truly Hong Kong char chan teng feel to it. I read somewhere that the owner is from Hong Kong so I guess it makes it authentic! More food pictures after the jump.

I highly recommend having the promotion roast duck set meal set. It only costs RM5.90 and you get a bowl of rice, really yummy roast duck and a cold Ribena drink. Its really worth it! I like the roast duck here – moist yet tasty – very much like the ducks roasted in Hong Kong.

I’ve also tried the Baked Grouper Cheese Rice for RM12.50. Its pricey but the portion is huge! If you are a small eater, it’ll be advisable to share. It takes a while to come and comes wrapped up in foil on a plate. The top of the baked rice is nicely browned and cheesey. Underneath the melted cheese is fried rice and generous slices of grouper fish in white sauce. Very rich, very sinful and very filling!

I’ve also tried the Rice with Beef Slices cooked in cantonese style. Its like a Kung-foo chow on rice; stir fried beef slices in an eggy sauce. Nice and large portions but I felt it lacking a bit in taste.

There is also Rice in Soup where we chose to have minced pork and wintermelon soup. Basically, this is just rice with pork and wintermelon soup ladled over it. It is very nice on a cold day though I found it a little too salty. The helpings of wintermelon and meat were generous and it came in a large bowl enough to feed 2!

Finally, what would Hong Kong food be without its snacks!

The snacks are mostly available at the stall outside. However, if you are dining in, you can choose your snacks outside and bring them into the restaurant. Some items, like the curry fishballs are available on the restaurant menu too. However, the selection is small.

The fried squid tentacles were yummy and cost something like RM8 for a generous sized basket. I thought it would be nice as an accompaniment to beer or as a snack as you are chatting with friends. The curry fishballs are nice although the curry sauce is too peppery for my taste. The fishballs are large and fried before being soaked in the curry sauce. The chee cheong fun (rice flour rolls) were a bit of a let down – too hard and too thick. But the rest of the snacks were pretty nice.

I used to see people crowding around the stall eating the snacks before. Now I know why! If you like Hong Kong style food, give Hong Kong Food Culture a shot. Their prices are very reasonable, food portions are large and food is yummy. Much better than any of the other chain Hong Kong restaurants any day!

UPDATE: Apparently this restaurant has moved and I’m still trying to track it down if its moved. It’ll be a pity if it closed down because the food was really good.
