Cupcake Chic – cupcakes with style

I was in The Curve one evening when I came across a little sign that said “Cupcake Chic” and professed to be a “cupcakery”. I was quite intrigued at the mysterious little sign so I followed it. It led me to Cupcake Chic, a bakery specializing in nothing but cupcakes.

Cupcake Chic is located at The Curve shopping centre, along the side of the main road that faces the entrance to Ikea. I found it rather inconveniently located, but clearly there were customers who knew where to look, for many people came by the bakery while I was there.

The concept of this “cupcakery” is quite unique for it sells only cupcakes and drinks. It is set up in a bakery style inside the store but there are tables outside if you’d like to eat your purchases there and then. A large menu is placed on the wall, which sets out the various cupcake flavours available, and when they are available. This is because not all flavours are available everyday – I guess its to relieve boredom.

Anyway, since I was already there, I decided to try a cupcake, to see if it lived up to its name of being “chic”. I chose Red Velvet - red velvet cake (chocolate with hint of red) with cream cheese frosting and red sugar sprinkles on top. 1 cupcake costs RM4.50 - pricey.

Cupcake Chic claims that:-

Our cupcakes are larger in size than your typical cupcake because we don’t compromise size for quality.

My verdict: It is not much larger than your regular cafe cupcake. In fact, I’d just come from Coffee Bean and I thought that the cupcakes at coffee bean were actually larger. The ones at Delicious Cafe are surely much bigger too. So, I think this claim falls rather flat.

I went for Red Velvet because I was told by the guy behind the counter that it was the least sweet of all the flavors available, and that it was the most popular. I don’t have a very sweet tooth so anything that isn’t very sweet gets my attention.

My verdict: It was sweet! Not only that, it was dry and crumbly too. Might it be because it was at night and the cupcake was not as fresh as it should be? I don’t quite know, but it was not easy to eat without it dropping all over or without getting cream cheese frosting in your face.

Which brings me to the set up of the cafe/bakery. I only wanted 1 cupcake because all I wanted was to try it. And because all I wanted was 1, I was literally handed 1 cupcake on a piece of tissue. No box, no bag, nothing. I did not fuss because I planned to eat it there anyway. There was no plate, no fork, nothing provided to enable you to properly enjoy the cupcake. I might actually have enjoyed it better if it was properly served.

The set up does not encourage you to enjoy your purchase there and then, and it feels more like a take-away place. There is some novelty in cupcakes and having a bakery with a large cupcake selection will definitely capture the imagination of the young and those with a sweet tooth. Its rather like one of those donut chains in this aspect.

I’m not quite sure I’ll return though. Somehow, I still prefer the old fashioned little fairy cakes which are near impossible to find anymore.

Pink Parisian [rating:3/5] for taste

Pink Parisian [rating:4/5] for novelty

sorry you had a bad experience. i was there a few times and loved it. service was friendly (overly friendly at times) and cupcakes were moist. my fav would be lanvender baileys and banoffy. i think they’re pretty good at making it less sweet then other cupcakes in the market now, i mean you’re not really left with too wide a margin to play with when the basic icing ingredient is sugar. very pricey but i think they’re worth it. my only gripe is there’s no real creamer for coffee/tea.

Kimberlycun: I read about your experience. Sounds a heck of a lot better than mine! Maybe I should try going in the day instead of at night or maybe I got a crappy sample.

RM4.50 for 1 cupcake is well…not very cheap. But the cupcake looks pretty though. Maybe you’re paying for the food presentation as well eh.

Twosuperheroes: Yep! Definitely paying for presentation too. Gotta admit they are creative.

I find that cupcakes are generally too sweet for my liking, so I haven’t joined the cupcake craze…

When i first look at the pricy cupcakes, I was telling myself not to cheater by them.
They just looks nice but not taste nice!!! (TIPU)
