Yo! Sushi at The Gardens MidValley
I was reading Kimberlycun’s gastronomic feast at Yo! Sushi and remembered that I’d been there too quite recently. I just never got round to writing about my visit. The thing is that I never knew that Yo! Sushi is actually a franchise from the UK.
Ironic that we would be importing a Japanese restaurant from the UK but there you go. The concept is similar to that of other Japanese fast food kaiten style restaurants. You sit around a conveyor belt that brings around colourful plates of sushi. To make things easier, at Yo! Sushi, they have color coded all the plates with a price so anything you order that comes on a particular coloured plate will have the same price. You can see some of the menu online although the prices are in GBP and not RM. If I recall correctly, the plates start from RM5 and prices go up from there at quite alarming rates.

For most of the sushi rolls, you get 2 large thick sushi rolls on a plate. An orange plate is RM10 I think so you do the math. Yo! Sushi is definitely not a place you can pop into and grab a quick inexpensive bite. Not here in Malaysia anyway.
To be fair to them though, the quality of the sushi is good. The sushi is tasty and fresh. Because the slices are large, and the rice well packed, you get a good bite out of them, as opposed to the loosely packed rolls found elsewhere.
I can’t vouch for their sashimi as I didn’t try any. But Kimberly seems to think they are great so I guess they are.
One thing I can’t really understand is the fact that they charge RM5 for green tea and similarly for miso soup. They say it is unlimited. But then so is the green tea in most of the Japanese restaurants I go to, and they don’t charge RM5 a cup! So, I think its a bit of a ripoff in that sector. In the UK it costs GBP1.75 for unlimited green tea. That seems more like it in RM i.e. RM1.75 or even RM2.
Having about 4 plates of sushi set 2 of us back more than RM50. Way too expensive. Lucky for us that we were small eaters and weren’t very hungry that night! I saw a couple pay over RM150 for dinner. Ouch!
I went to the Yo! Sushi outlet at The Gardens. This is located in the walkway between the old wing and new wing of Midvalley megamall. The interior is quite dimly lit and I found it a tad chaotic. The servers do try to explain the concept and menu to you if its your first time, but I could hardly catch what she was saying - music was quite loud and she was speaking really fast and softly. Oh and she was not happy that I did not want to pay RM5 for green tea. Not only was it the price, fact is, I don’t drink green tea much and especially not at night.
So, is this a must visit? Yes, if you want to try something new and if you have a windfall in your pocket or want to have a treat. But for the price, I’d rather eat elsewhere because >RM150 for 2 is way too much to pay for sushi from a kaiten.
