How does Instant Sharksfin Soup measure up?

I was in Jusco recently when this prepacked Instant Sharksfin Soup caught my eye in the freezer department.

It comes in a set of 2 bowls for about RM28.88 and is made by a company called Kami. I was intrigued and so bought to try. Now before I get any lectures about sharksfins and the environment, let it be known that I do eat sharksfin so please do not purport to lecture me on this issue, yes?

Now, about this Instant Gourmet Sharksfin. It is precooked and all it needs is to be microwaved or steamed before being eaten. I opted for the steaming method because I don’t like using the microwave. The instructions say to steam it until it is boiling which I did. It is important for it to be heated all the way through.

Half an hour later (I heated it from frozen) this is what I got:

One bowl fills a medium sized soup bowl. The texture of the soup is thick but it doesn’t feel super starchy. There is shredded crab meat and dried scallops in it, as well as the sharksfin, of course. The fins are not the long thin ones that look like noodles, but come in little “fans”. I’m told this is a sign its “genuine” but for RM14 I’m hardly complaining.

Overall, I found this instant sharksfin soup quite satisfactory. It is not gourmet but its quite fun to sneak in a bit of luxury on a normal day.  The taste might be a little bit fishy but a touch of brandy in the soup soon cured that. With the brandy, it tasted like something from a restaurant – I’m not kidding!

So, no need to pay super high prices for sharksfin soup this Chinese New Year. Just buy a few packs of these, heat it up, add more crab meat and dried scallop, add a touch of brandy and you will have everyone asking you for your sharksfin soup recipe. You of course, will have to tell them its a family secret! ;)

What would you tell your kids when they ask you, “Mummy, what’s a shark? Did sharks really exist?” ??

PB says: erm… maybe take them to an aquarium? Or tell a lie and say they never existed, like dinosaurs :)
