Pastis Cafe at The Gardens Midvalley
I met up with Pink Elle at The Gardens a couple of days back and we weren’t sure what to eat there. After walking around for a bit, PE suggested the Pastis Cafe at the entrance of Isetan on the Ground Floor.
It is a open concept cafe style place that is quite quiet, which I attribute it to being new and it being a week day. The decor is orange and white and the waiter was polite. They have a chiller section with cakes and savouries but there is also an ala carte menu with hot food. We opted for the latter seeing as it was a rainy day and cold.

I had a Farmhouse Chicken Pie (RM16.80) which came with mashed potatoes and a green salad.
The mushroom sauce ladled lavishly over the mashed potates and pie was tasty but it might have smothered the taste of the pie itself. I did not really taste much of the pie. The puff pastry was flakey which was nice, and I enjoyed the green salad tossed with a simple french dressing. Don’t be fooled by this dish because it was quite filling. Definitely comfort food.
Lunch Buddy (LB) had a Linguine Carbonara (RM19.00) which came in a large plate and the pasta pooled in the centre with some spices sprinkled around the sides of the plate and a piece of crispy beef bacon topping it with some parmesan cheese.
LB proclaimed it tasty although the pasta was slightly over cooked. It was a dry carbonara so those expecting the pasta to be swimming in a pool of cheesey white sauce would be in for a disappointment. I however, like my carbonara in this fashion so I quite liked it. I did feel that they could have improved on the garnishing by adding a little sprig of parsley or a bit of green to perk up the dish a little.
PE decided to be adventurous and opted for a dish called a Savoyarde (RM20.80). It was a mish mash of items on a buckwheat crepe (pancake) which was very interesting.
Sitting on the crepe were 2 chipolata sausages, a green salad tossed in french dressing, some sauted mushrooms and a boiled potato with sour cream. The sausages were tasty but a tad on the salty side. The boiled potatos were a little undercooked so we didn’t finish them. It was quite a hearty dish and though it doesn’t look it, it is definitely for biggish eaters. Again presentation fell a little short because they served it on the underside of the crepe which makes it look like a piece of cloth. I think it would have looked better if the crepe had been flipped over first before serving.
Finally, LB had something called a “Coffee you can eat” (RM12) which was espresso-cappucino flavoured mousse served in an espresso cup.
Unfortunately, again the presentation left much to be desired because the mousse was piped into the cup in a most unattractive and unappetising manner. I’m not sure if there is any other way they could have presented this, but it definitely merits some thought. Otherwise if you’d like to try this, just close your eyes and spoon it into your mouth. It is actually quite tasty.
The bill came up to RM80.10 for 3 persons with service tax and 2 cups of warm water. I think it rather expensive, but since you are sitting in a relatively comfortable environment in a shopping mall, it is about average price for the location and food quality. I saw some people having their tea set which was a tiered tray of sandwiches and scones and pastries for RM42.00. It looks like fun.
Would I return? Maybe. Its not a must-visit cafe, but its a decent enough choice with quite nice food especially when you are bored of the usual cafe fare. This promises cafe fare with a French twist but it would seriously help if they worked a little on their food presentation too.
