The next time you are in Brickfields, make a detour to this stall situated opposite the entrance to the YMCA on Jalan Tun Sambanthan.
Its just a little stall on the pavement outside the corner coffeshop. They sell some of the best fried snacks this side of Kuala Lumpur – and I’m not kidding.
The bananas are sweet and crispy golden, the curry puffs are delectably flavoured and crispy, the sesame balls crispy with flavoursome filling of peanuts or red bean, and the “nien ko” sandwiched with sweet potato is positively yummy. My dad loves the sesame balls which he says is very authentic and very yummy as it is chockful of the tasty crushed peanut filling.
You can tell I love his fried snacks! He usually comes out around 12pm and the stuff goes fast because sometimes, people place large orders, especially for the curry puffs, and he fries them fresh at the stall. He has a unique system at work, where he communicates by intercom to a room above the shoplot where his raw materials are prepared, and they are then lowered down for him in a basket. Very clever.
The young man in the photo is just helping the owner who is an oldish man. So, as I said above, next time you are in Brickfields, try his fried snacks and you might just find yourself going back for more.

It’s called Banana fritters.
PB says: Well in the true sense of the word, this stall sells fried whole bananas, not sliced or frittered
I am a great fan of fried bananas. Once in a blue moon, I will buy about 3 ringgit worth and have it for lunch
PB says: Wah! Unhealthy but yummy no?
The sportsmen have the unfried version. I like mine fried. So, that makes it less healthy
but much more delicious!
PB says: LOL I fully concur!
What am I doing here in Italy, gorging myself on gelato instead? Duh…
PB says: I’d happily trade places LB! *teleports fried bananas to Italy*
