Mee Siput - fried noodle cake snack

Photo-0180I can’t think of anything in English that can adequately describe these little noodle snacks which I grew up eating. We knew them as “Mee Siput” which translates as “Snail noodles”. It sounds quite gross but what it actually is is noodles twisted up into a cake form and then deep fried.

Basically, its a noodle snack. As its deep fried, its crunchy and tastes rather like eating ‘keropok’ crackers. I remember eating them a lot in school where they would cost something like 20 sen per piece and we’d try to grab the largest piece of all. It is usually eaten with sambal for a lovely spicy ‘kick’.

I’ve never seen this here in Kuala Lumpur, nor anywhere else except in the South where I’m from. And so, the next time I was back in my hometown, and saw it being sold at one of the stalls in town, I decided to pick one up to see if it was as nice as I remembered it to be.

Photo-0179This time, it comes packaged in a plastic bag with a packet of chilli sauce included. I felt that it spoilt things a tad because nothing beats having a thick sambal to go with the noodle cake.

Some people like to crush up the mee siput before eating but I prefer to eat it whole and bite off pieces of it. And was it as good as I remembered it to be?

Yes. It was nice and it brought back the memories but its not something I’d be eating very much of. Do you remember eating “mee siput”? Do you have “mee siput” where you live?

Wuahahahah! When I saw the title, I thought it was fried balitong noodles or something. Didn’t expect this.

PB says: LOL… have you eaten this in your hometown?

It looks alien to me.. I have never seen it, let alone tasted it, though from the way you described it, it sounds totally delish!

Nope, don’t see it around…

I have tried it. Nice & crispy!!

Mee siput! *squeals with delight* Oh how I remember rushing out after school and buying them from the stall. Ooh, the sambal was damn kick. No words to describe this culinary delight of my childhood days. This and Kiki bubble gum.

hahah u are one of them weirdos who eat this stuff …

my mom has this friend, sort of like family friend la … she is from muar … so everytime she is back there she would buy these otak otak - the chiense ones, not the one in leaves, and this muruku thingy …

i am not sure why people like it, but its tasteless, and hard … and the chilli … its freakin hot … normally i would just munch a few strands, its hard and tasteless … hahaha

but the chilli sometimes my mom when cooking sambal will dump it in … its freakin hot …

I woult to know know where can i buy the Mi Siput at KL or Selangor area. It is very hard to find from this two area. and the Nasi kerabu advertisement here at where?

TQ
Anson
