Taiping Char Kuey Teow
Last Friday, sis and I took a trip to the Sentul Pasar Ramadhan to get something for dinner. Puzzled at the massive crowd there, we soon realised that the usual Pasar Malam had somehow merged with the Pasar Ramadhan which caused an amazing crush. What I found most amusing too was the sight of Chinese sellers selling their food alongside the Malay traders hawking their traditional fare. That with the occasional Indian vadai stall thrown in. Ah, this is truly Malaysia for you!
While attempting to push our way through the sea of people, a van with smoke billowing out from the side caught our attention. Going closer to take a better look, we saw that it was a Taiping char kuey teow man. His business was really good as he fried packet after packet, non-stop. He even had a little sign on his van which listed the prices for varying options for char kuey teow (with egg, without egg, with duck egg, cockles, etc.) in varying numbers, all the way to 10 packets! According to his wife, they have been selling in the pasar malam for over 10 years already!
We ordered one, sans cockles and I was pleasantly surprised to see him throw in a generous handful of fishcake. Watching him fry made it look so easy and fast without compromising the quality of his char kuey teow. Guess that’s what 10 years of practise does! He scooped it all into this cute little package of brown paper lined with plastic that was wrapped up into a cone. I found that rather quaint and a refreshing change from Styrofoam packages most hawkers use.
We got home, opened the packet and the most delicious aroma wafted out. Behold the Taiping char kuey teow!
I don’t normally eat char kuey teow but not even I could resist this one. The noodles were very well-fried over a hot stove and the beansprouts were still crispy. I particularly liked the fishcake addition to it.
Simply delicious!
P/S I could have put up a smaller picture but good char kuey teow should be savoured, don’t you think? Even if it’s only in a picture form!

Speaking of pasar ramadhan, went there on Tuesday. Had murtabak daging, pari bakar with sh*tloads of chilli, huge whole chicken leg percik, stick of hati (!!), apam and keropok lekor.
Gonna burst my pants soon…
