I love the Mangosteen

I had a shipment of mangosteens recently, which is a treat. Mangosteens are generally quite expensive so being given a few kilos of it sent me over the moon.

The mangosteen is a tropical fruit. The fruit has a thick dark purple skin, similar to the colour of an augergine/eggplant. When you break open the skin, the flesh inside is a snow white colour. The flesh comes in segments, rather like that of an orange and has a lot of fibre covering a translucent seed.

The flesh has a sweet-sour taste that is not unpleasent. I’m not sure what I can liken it to, but its absolutely yummy! Urban myth dictates that you cannot eat this fruit with sugar as it will cause fermentation which leads to death. I don’t know how true it is, but we won’t risk that will we?

When eating this, take special care not to get the purple due from the skin on your clothes or floor. The dye is exceptionally fast and once it stains your clothes, it will turn into a yellow stain that is impossible to remove.

The mangosteen is a seasonal fruit and usually available in larger quantities in June/July.

To choose the fruit, lightly press the skin. If it is soft, take it. If it is as hard as a rock, throw it!

Daddy says the same as Pablo, only take the ones that are soft. He also said you must select the brown skin ones as they have been exposed to the sunlight and are sweeter. He picked a whole bunch of them out for me when I was home recently and every single one of them was sweet and juicy. Yum, yum.
