On my last trip to Ipoh I spent about half an hour hunting down a coffee shop selling the famous Ipoh Hor Fun (Ipoh style noodles) because someone told me it was a “must-have”. This was the coffee shop in question.
Don’t ask me where it is. I have absolutely no idea! Its in the town itself and the interior of the shop has a row of large mirrors on one wall.
I was told the Ipoh hor fun here was worth eating, so here I was. The stall is in the front of the shop and from the number of tables filled with people eating this noodle, I must say its quite popular.
How did I like it however?
I’m afraid I didn’t. I found the noodles too soft and the amount of shredded chicken given was very little. I hardly mixed it up before taking the picture and you can barely see any pieces of chicken. There were 3 half prawns. Not even a full prawn, but half a prawn.
The soup tasted starchy which told me that too much noodles had gone into it. Overall, it was quite a disappointment.
I ordered the ubiquitious blanched bean sprouts (tau ge) that one usually has in Ipoh. This was not too bad. The bean sprouts were suitably fat and crunchy but the soy sauce was a tad too salty. I enjoyed the beansprouts but not the noodles, sad to say.

Ipoh Horfun!! now this… this is what I truly miss. can’t find good Ipoh Horfun here. there’s one place that does it reasonably well, but not as good as the original. hmmm, I’m trying to remember that shop’s name in Ipoh… is it Lou Wong ah?
I’m ashamed to admit that being an Ipoh girl, it has been ages since I have had this delicacy. I’m sad to note that the standard has spiralled downwards too…
