Phuket Food - Briyani Rice
Phuket’s in the south of Thailand so every now and then, you do come across some hints of the Malay influence of north Malaysia. Of course, you usually see this only in the eating places where the locals frequent. The foreign tourists usually prefer to stick to their tried and true, “that won’t poison me” steak and fries which to me, totally defeats the purpose of traveling! But that’s another post altogether…
In the same row of stalls where we ate the Pad Thai, we chanced upon a lady manning a stall with a big pot of this yellow flavoured rice. It wasn’t so much of the rice that caught my attention but rather the delicious looking chicken drumsticks on top of it.
Now, we don’t speak Thai and the lady doesn’t speak English but sign language got us a plate of this rice with a chicken drumstick, topped with a freshly fried egg! And of course the ubiquitous fresh salad leaves plus water to wash it down…all for THB250!
At the table is a pot of really spicy chilli that goes superbly with the rice and probably kills whatever bacteria the fresh veges or water might harbour! The rice was rather tasteless, and the grains were a bit hard which is different from our fragrant, fluffy briyani rice here. The chicken, which I suspect was cooked together with the rice, was delicious though. Tender with a hint of fragrance from the spices and sauces it was braised in, it had that bite that our local chickens seem to lack and was a good-sized drumstick for the price.
If I could speak the language, I would have like to know if the lady had learnt this from the Northern Malays!

Haven’t had briyani in a long time… the chicken drumsticks look juicy! Yum!
PE says: The drumsticks were yummy but they weren’t very big nor spicy. Quite good if you don’t like spicy stuff!
THB250 (RM25) for a plate of this? Super expensive, no?
PE says: AIYA! Sorry it was THB25…RM2.50. Sorry ah!
there’s a pretty decent briyani dish here in an Indian restaurant near my workplace. but because I don’t eat briyani that often, I couldn’t tell if it was the same as the KL ones! tasted good nevertheless.
PE says: With Australia being such a melting pot of culture, I’m sure you wouldn’t miss Malaysian food that badly!
