One thing I like about Thailand is their abundance of pork, pork and more pork everywhere! They do the most delicious pork bratwurst sausages at their little roadside stalls for a song, a mere THB15 (RM1.50, €0.3)! How to find sausages with those kind of prices anywhere else in the world?!
So when I arrived in Phuket, I very excitedly headed for the first sausage stall I saw. The woman was even happily grilling them fresh so I was sure they’ll be nice and hot and yummy!
I happily bought my sausage and eager beaver me was longing to sink my teeth into it. I took a bite and WOAHHHHH…*cues screeching sound and fluffy happy music stops*
IT WAS NOT PORK!!
It was instead some translucent vermicelli strands bound together with some tiny pieces of pork and bits of unidentifiable stuff in a thin transparent casing. The casing was probably made out of intestine, like a true sausage, and felt a little like plastic with quite a bit of resistance when you bite it. It’s quite strong-tasting and a the taste of fat in it was greasy and a bit cloying after a while. Then again, that’s probably what authentic sausages are supposed to be like!
So if you see these nice fat little links sizzling in Thailand, take a closer look or you might just be conned into eating a vermicelli sausage, like me!

Haha, sorry to hear about that. In my humble opinion, the good old English Banger is the best pork (or otherwise) sausage in the whole wide world, bar none!! I can’t wait to pig out at Sri Hartamas’ Jarrod & Rawlins’ again, very soon!
PE says: Agreed! Although the Italian sossies are pretty good too!
Mmmmmmmmmmm look tasty to me.
PE says: They weren’t!
Eeee… the casing tasted like plastic? Yuck! Phtui!
PE says: Yalor
Not only tasted of plastic but it had a greasy lardy smell to it too! *pukes*
dang, I really thought those were porkie sausages! I wouldn’t mind trying vermicelli ones, though. a healthier option, minus the plastic taste?
PE says: Hmm…dunno, do give it a try if you’re in Thailand. I didn’t quite like that porky lardy flavour and plasticky texture!
