Phuket Food – Pancakes

in Phuket, Street Food, Thai

When you go to either Bangkok or Phuket, you may notice little stalls like these dotted over the island. Go take a closer look because they’re making really interesting pancakes! They can be a bit elusive and usually seem to come out only at night so do keep your eyes open!

This chap in Patong Beach opens only after 8pm, probably to cater to the drunk crowd that spills out of the bars in the wee hours of the morning. It’s a little stall with signs hung all over proudly displaying the varieties of pancakes he has with their prices. Any kind, sweet or savoury, he’ll do it for you on his little griddle!

He does it a little like a crepe, spreading the batter on his hot griddle. And just to prove that he really is using Nutella, he has a bottle of it right in front of his stall with all his other various condiments.

This was the banana chocolate pancake and in true Thai sweetness fashion, finished off with a drizzle of condensed milk. The Thais really love their food sweet! And the taste? It actually resembles a very sweet roti canai. I could only eat small portions of it as I don’t have a sweet tooth and it gets a bit jelak after a while. But if you love sweet desserts then this is something for you to look out for in Thailand!

I didn’t like the ultra sweet pancake as well. Have had one the nicest pancakes in Cambodia in 1996 at a guest house that my friend and I bunked in. We had two pieces of pancakes each everyday for the entire time we were there, post war Cambodia took USD only and the pancakes were not cheap, it was USD2 per piece, 10 years ago!

PE says: Ooh that sounds yum! :) But yeah, definitely not cheap! I would have expected prices in Cambodia to be much cheaper than that!

I remember eating this when I was in Krabi. not too bad for a midnight snack, but I’d rather have a savoury roti canai than sweet. bananas were good, though!

PE says: Same same…gimme a roti telur any day :)
