When in Ipoh, what strikes you most? Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun, Ipoh Sar Hor Fun… but what about Hakka mee? Well it certainly did not strike me as something to eat in Ipoh. However, whilst looking for an Ipoh Sar Hor Fun stall, I stumbled upon this Famous Mee Hakka stall.
I don’t quite know how to describe its location save to say that it fronts a main road and is near an arch. One street behind are the shops selling the popular Ipoh chicken Hor Fun/rice with beansprouts. I don’t know if its really famous, but at 10am, the shop was full, and they advertised themselves as being famous so… who better to blow their own trumpet!
The Single, Half and Double mee refer to the sizes i.e. Single will be 1 ball of noodles etc. Clearer than S, M and L right? We did not know what to order so we told the stall owner we wanted a mixed set. After all, you can’t go wrong with sampling a variety.
This is what came:
A bowl with tofu stuffed with fish paste and various um… balls. Fish ball, meat balls and a fried fish ball. The other bowl with the 4 fried things were either tapioca or sweet potato balls. Very interesting.
The noodle came dry with minced pork braised in soy sauce on the top.
The noodle was quite nice. The texture was good and there was no lye smell which I absolutely detest. The meat too was flavoursome if a tad too little. The fishball accompaniments were only so-so in my view, with the meat ball tasting quite a disaster. The tapioca/sweet potato ball thing was weird as its a tiny bit sweet.
Because we were tourists we ended up paying about RM5.50 per bowl. OUCH! We noticed that the locals would specify what balls they wanted to accompany their meal so if you follow the price chart, you can actually get a pretty affordable bowl of noodles. If you were like us and asked for “cham” prepared to get chopped!

Oooh, I must try those out! Is that in Ipoh new town? Somewhere near the old Durian St, by sound of things.. But you’ve also reminded me of the Ipoh Kampar Mee.. The one I must go to every time, is in Canning Garden ~ the most delicious yummy beefballs, and the I-don’t-know-what-you-call-them dark balls.. Hmm..
PB says: I’m clueless about new/old town. I just know its near the 2 famous Ipoh Nga Choi Kai shops. Its a corner shop facing the main road. Sorry ah…
Hmm… can’t reckon where it that
but it sure looks delicious
PB says: Sorry Ipoh was a blur for me lol!
I know where that shop is… I was at the two famous chicken rice shops during my last trip to Ipoh!
But… that place simply slaughters you with the prices. The same amount of food we ordered in Ipoh that cost us RM 28 plus only cost around RM 14 – 17 in KL. Go figure.
Why don’t you like lye smell? I love the smell of lye! *sob*
)))
I’d take in any sort of noodles, I’m such a noodle fan. except for yellow noodles, that never really tickled my fancy. and those fishballs! I gotta find me some good ones here!
The stall is moved to the opposite, currently at Paris Restaurant. Still run by the same uncle. The drinks there are better and of reasonable prices too
The drinks stall is also famous for its homemade kaya, try it out.
