Steamed pork ribs with red dates and dong kwai

Ooh! I didn’t know that sis posted about healthy food in the previous post. Here’s another healthy steamed dish I whipped up one evening when I was trying to get a little creative. It probably isn’t new but this is my version of steamed pork ribs with red dates and dong kwai.

You need:

How to:

  1. Marinade the pork ribs and set aside for about half an hour.
  2. Slice the dong kwai into small pieces for optimum flavour. Don’t use too much as this herb is “heaty” and the taste is very strong.
  3. Make slits in the red dates so the flavour and sweetness will be released as it cooks.
  4. Scatter the dong kwai, red dates and wolfberries over the pork ribs.
  5. Boil up some water in a pot/wok and then steam the dish for about an hour to get the ribs soft or half an hour if you can’t wait. In half an hour the meat will be cooked, but it won’t be very soft and tender. The more ribs you have, the longer you’ll have to steam it for.

I like it when the dish is done and there’s a lot of juice on the plate. So, always make sure you usea deep plate to catch all the juices. I love spooning them over hot rice. Really whets the appetite!

This dish would work with chicken as well. Chicken cooks faster so half an hour is about all you need. Cut the pieces small so the flavour gets absorbed more.

Steam eh? My mum always does this type of dish in soup style… must suggest to her to try out steaming… hehehe.

PB says: Soup? I haven’t tried it in soup but I love steamed ribs

spare ribs contains one of the high cholestrol in pork meat

PB says: Thanks for the info. Too bad they are so tasty as are all bad stuff lol!

oh I’m so drooling for this! and missing home. my mom makes that dish quite well. I can’t seem to find small pork ribs like those here, and the ones in the supermarkets don’t have much meat either. I wonder if they have them in chinatown. a-shopping we will go!
