Eating Healthily

As much as we like our unhealthy fried foods, we do try to eat healthily whenever we can. I like the good feeling a nice, light and healthy dinner gives me plus I feel less guilty when I’m tucking into an oil-laden fried dish the next day! Heh…

So, this was what we had for dinner one night:

Clockwise from the top:

  • Red spinach with fried anchovies and century egg in a light soup (“siong tong yim choi“)

We had actually gone out for a walk before this and came home in a rush to cook dinner. I was lazy to wash the wok again after frying the vege so I heated up a little bit of water with some dried anchovies to boil, simmered it for a while until the flavour was released and threw in the vege to cook. Take it out, pour some soup on it, chop up some century egg and top with fried anchovies. Light and delicious!

  • Steamed tofu with 3 kinds of egg

This was dad’s concoction! Bascially he mashed up the tofu, cut up some century egg and boiled salt egg, poured beaten egg over it and put the whole dish to steam. It comes out like egg custard but softer and fluffier with the addition of the tofu. Interesting!

  • Steamed fish with black bean and chillie

Steamed fish is one of my favourites, provided only of course that the fish is very fresh. We tried using this local fish, kerisi and through trial and error found that it was actually really nice when steamed! It’s white fish so you won’t have that fishy smell problem you get with oil fish. Easy to do too. Julienne some ginger and scatter that with salted black bean and cut chillies on the fish before you steam it. Yummy!

  • Brown rice

And we ate these all with Somaly brown rice!

It took us about less than an hour to put dinner together so this is proof that a simple yet healthy dinner is possible! Got to run now, my tummy’s reminding me that it’s time for dinner!

I love steamed sam wong tan so much I could have just that all by itself! Then again, with so much more on the menu, why not have the steamed fish as well, some oyster sauced kailan, and a rackful of unhealthy bbq baby ribs? Yeah? Yum!

PE says: Sorry been MIA! Baby back ribs sound good too! Bring them on! Some unhealthy stuff to counter the healthy ones :)

The steamed tofu with three kinds of egg looks absolutely yum! I love my egg and my tofu… makes me want steamed egg with mince meat now…

PE says: Did you get your steamed egg after all? :)
